* I'm looking for help with an Internet Explorer problem. The problem...IE
does not even attempt to connect to the internet when started. Running a
TCP/IP probe shows no attempt to even try to connect. IE just sits there with
a blank page and the name of my home page in its titlebar. There is no error
message, no time out message, no can't find server message, nothing except
the busy
cursor is active. All other internet connectivity programs work fine
including things like ping and netstat, e-mail, other browsers, etc.
* I am running W2000 Pro with IE 6 and all patches on an older 500 mhz HP
Vectra with 250 megs of memory.
* I run three antivirus programs as well as three antispyware programs
and a software firewall. They all run constantly in real time and are all
updated daily.
* I am behind a hardware firewall on a cable ISP
* Here's what happened. My mother-in law sent me a link to a website
that she and others she knew and had been to without any resulting problems.
During the URL connection, my computer froze and I had to restart it. After
that, the problem ocurred.
* I know what you are going to say...spyware, virus, etc.
* I went to the actual e-mail and serched the code without finding
anything amiss. I went to the website with Sam Spade, checked the source
code, and found nothing out of the ordinary. I even did a virus scan on the
pictures that were on the site. Nothing.
* I have scanned the computer with the antivirus and antispyware
programs as well as antihijack and other programs. Nothing.
* I have gone to as many websites as I could find that might come even close
to addressing this problem and taken their advice including removing all
browser extensions, uninstalling and reinstalling IE (done three times),
doing an IE repair, doing a SFC check for changed system files, etc. Hosts
file is unchanged. Cache, history, and cookies have been cleared. Nothing.
* I have come to the conclusion that when the computer froze and I had to
restart it, the freaking registry became corrupt and therefore appropriate
connection links between IE and the TCP/IP stack were lost.
* I am currently using a combination of Firefox and Opera to do my
surfing, but there ar times when these programs are lacking in ability to
display content properly, or the page just will not accept anything else than
IE.
* I guess my question is (and this would probably be aimed at
programmers), does anyone know where in the registry that information would
reside that links IE to the TCP/IP stack and what it might look like so I can
try to restore it?
