IE PopUp Windows won't open with SP2

Having upgraded Windows XP with SP2; user initiated Popup windows in IE6
won't open.

Strictly they open briefly and then close immediately. They all seem to be
JavaScript windows.

A typical example is http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/default.stm . If you
click on the 'Watch/Listen to BBC News' button to the right of the main BBC
News header you might (or might not!) see what I mean.

Displaying the pages in Netscape 7.0 enables the windows to open as they
should.

If you hold down the ctrl key and it works OK then it's the popup stopper in
SP2. You will need to allow popups from that site.
Neil

Forget that it works OK with mine with IE.

Try the following and see if it helps:

For XP SP2: First try disabling the popup blocker:

Go to IE/Tools/Internet Options/Privacy/Pop-up blocker/disable.

or...

Tools > Popup blocker > select to > disable.

I decided to use the nuclear option - I uninstalled SP2!
However, the problem persists so it must be something else. The fact that
the windows open fine with Netscape indicates a IE6 probelm.

There is no error message - the window opens and then just closes staright
away. It is not restricted to the BBC site - all user initiated javascript
windows behave the same.

Hi Gareth :-)

Comments in line....
I decided to use the nuclear option - I uninstalled SP2!

To say the least!! Now that you know that it will not help the situation, I
suggest that for the time being, you leave it uninstall until we can find
out what is causing the problem you are now having. And.....before you
decide to reinstall it, here is some very important information you might
wish review prior to installing.

'k...I've just gone to the http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/default.stm link
and opened the Watch/Listen window, and all is fine for me. (<g>)

Now....were things working properly before you installed the SP2? Were you
able to access the Watch/Listen window alright before then? If things were
working fine, and now they aren't, there may have been a corruption of some
of the JavaScript files for IE with the install of SP2.

Try the following that applies to your system, and see if they will help:

browsers. Here, courtesy of Michel Gallant, MVP Security, is a tiny utility

A note from Mitch Gallant:

"One note about the JVM Selector utility: If/when you install a new
version of Sun J2SE, you need to manually
select to have Sun JVM as default JVM for IE (in install), or after install
via the JavaPlugin control panel. This generates the necessary win32
registry entries, which must be present for the utility to know about
JavaPlugin. After that, the utility should work properly."

I'm having the same problem, but I had this before I installed SP2 (I
was hoping SP2 would fix it). Unfortunately I've nothing to really
add, except that this was a fairly sudden problem for me, and was
around ebfore SP2 was installed (though after it was released).

My only guess is that a Windows update 'hotfix' did this, but I've not
identified one as yet.

Any updates on this one would really be appreciated.

I am afraid that has not worked. I have also just finished implementing your
previous suggestions especially:
Reinstalling Java, Microsoft VM, JavaScript, IE SP1, all dlls and other
registry entries, testing JavaScript ...

There is no error message - the window just opens for a split second and
then closes.
The problem must be IE related since the windows open just fine in Netscape.

I'm having this _exact_ same issue - seems to be that any "open window
call" that originates with JavaScript commands runs into this issue.
Unlikely that it's the built-in pop-up blocker (I've tried both adding
the "offending" domain and disabling the pop-up blocker - via
tools/pop-upblocer _and_ Security Options->Misc->"Use Popup Blocker").

Gareth - the only other thing I can think is some incompatibility with
the Google Toolbar, which I installed after SP2 ... do you also have
the Google toolbar installed, by chance?

Incidentally, I just tried disabling the following options in IE
Security settings for the Internet Zone, still no luck:

- Allow script-initiated windows without size or position constraints
- Allow scripting of IE Webbrowser control

Further, this doesn't resolve the problem either:
- Add the site to your trusted list of pop-up sites

We're having a similar issue, but with a PC running XP SP1 that has
never had SP2 installed. On 10/14 we installed the critical updates
for XP and IE, along with the .net framework update. Since then IE on
that one machine has been unwilling to allow websites to open windows
via javascript for any normal user.

IE reports version: 6.0.2800.1106 XPSP2.030422-1633

There are no aftermarket toolbars or accessories installed except
Acrobat reader.

Our killer is the FedEx web page; once you log in and enter package
info, you hit the continue button. On every other PC in the building
(and in Firefox/Mozilla) _or_ on this PC but _only_ when logged on as
the domain admin, a window pops up with the shipment info so you can
edit or accept it. When any other user, even the local administrator,
and only on this one PC is logged on, nothing happened when you hit
the continue button. There are a number of other PCs with the same
hardware and software configs, all updated the same day with the same
critical updates, none running XP-SP2, and all of them work fine.

We've tried adding the fedex site, and specific URLs to the trusted
zone, reset privacy and security settings as low as possible to test,
verified the global domain security policies are not involved, that
there are no local security policies that are relevant to IE
operation, all with no change in function. The only thing that made
any difference was deinstalling the .net framework update, then later
re-installing it (due to application requirements). After it was
reinstalled we started getting an error dialog when hitting the
continue button:

Line 38: Error The callee (Server[NotServerApplication]) is not
available and disappeared; all connections are invalid. The call did
not execute.

Prior to this we were wondering if somehow the most recent IE update
installed the guts of the pop-up blocker but without adding the
ability to manage it (there's nothing in the options screen or other
menus that would be new with the actual SP2 install).

Any thoughts? The customer is OK with Firefox for now, but would like
to go back to only needing one browser.

I just tried enabling the activex controls and plug-ins and set the Java VM
to Medium security and I was able to get this pop-up for posting msgs in this
site which I was not able to before. But there is another site which I go to
for our office emails that I still get the pop-up block msg whenever I try to
compose a new email. I am able to bypass it by hitting the CTRL key. I have
a win xp with sp2 and IE6.

Forget what I just said about enabling the activex helping me to enable a
pop-up. It still doesn't work. I still can't open the pop-up for posting a
question but I am able to post replies.

My block pop-ups in internet options is unchecked. I also have Norton

the Ad Blocking is turned off. When I try to click on the icon in this site

the lower left corner of my screen right beside the E symbol. I clicked the
pop-up icon on the right side and it says "Turn on pop-up blocker" so I
assume it is still off.

I badly need to post a new question since I have a problem with my restart

my taskbar but the PC remains active. I have to click it a 2nd time for it

I badly need to post a new question

What's the problem doing that?

Hmm... I just tried this. You have to singleclick on that New button.
That brings up a popup menu with items Question and General
Comment in it. Clicking on Question pops up a New Question
window. It is an IE window but there is no Address bar or Toolbar
on it.

Were you logged in to Passport before trying to do this?
It is definitely messier trying to get to that New Question window
with a Passport login prompt being injected in between.

Even if you have the popup blocker in effect you could force it
to allow these ones by putting microsoft.com in your Trusted sites
list. Here's an extract from the Popup Blocker FAQ which elaborates
on that idea:
<quote>
Internet Explorer will not block pop-ups from Web sites that are in
two Web content zones: Local intranet or Trusted sites.
