The following is a summary of the problems that some of my
users have encountered with IE:

- The computer will not print or print preview in Internet
Explorer

- Links that open new Internet Explorer pages or Java
windows will not work...nothing happens when the user
clicks a link , you can not right click the link and
select open in a new window

- The computer is not able to search for files or folders
from the Start menu...Click the Start button - Search -
Files or Folders Nothing happens

This does not happen on every computer and it appears to
happen after the computer is in service. That is they work
properly when they are first rolled out.

This is happening on a random selection of computers
(Compaq, Northern Micro, IBM) The computers in question
are all Windows 2000. Win98 users do not appear to be
affected.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Jinna

I have seen the same problems Jinna has and then some
(starting a couple days ago). In summary:

1. explorer (file and IE) search bar completely blank
2. IE find dialog broken (find next button disabled, cancel
button has no effect)
3. IE about dialog broken (version number etc all blank, ok
button has no effect)
4. IE print preview broken (entire window blank)
5. IE javascript broken (many web page links and buttons
have no effect)
6. IE displays blank page for windowsupdate.microsoft.com
(probably javascript related)
7. VS ms-help style sheets broken (possibly javascript related

Urlmon stuff did not help. IEFix did not help.

I am using IE6 SP1 on WinXP. I've tried uninstalling my
Google toolbar, and running ie6setup; nothing changed. I
have not installed or uninstalled any significant
applications in the last week that I can recall.

Any more ideas anyone? Using mozilla and cygwin tools
instead of iexplorer is getting tiresome.

Thanks for the pointer, I did get rid of some spyware,
however all symptoms are unchanged. I do not appear to
have any known virii. Is there a more drastic way of
resetting IE I could try, short of reinstalling the OS?

Chris

All symptoms listed below suddenly disappeared today when I
ran IE for the first time in a while to check on them. It
automatically browsed to the windows update site, which
displayed this time, but gave an error (0x800A138F).
Trying windows update again was successful.

As far as I can tell, Microsoft broke by system last week
by remotely installing an update without my knowledge, then
fixed it, again without my knowledge or permission.

Needless to say, I have a newfound fondness for Mozilla
(Firebird, actually), and all non-Microsoft products for
that matter.

I suspect uninstalling Google Toolbar and (today) rebooting had something to
do with the problem clearing up.

The Windows Update error is a Known Suspect and is dealt with in several
sections of Windows Update Troubleshooter:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/.

Microsoft doesn't install anything without your, perhaps tacit,
permission/knowledge, Christopher.[/QUOTE]
