I'm using XP and a dial-up modem. I had a guy come fix
my PC after it crashed once and ever since has been doing
something weird...it will automatically open up IE
whether I want to or not. Just dials up and opens it
without my wanting to. I've virus checked myself and I'm
all set so it's not that. Does anyone know what could be
causing this? I'm currently using ATT Worldnet internet
service. Thanks in advance for your help!

You should check in your Tools | Internet Options | Connections tab and see
if you have it set to automatically dial you when an application requires
it. Turn that off if you do. That will be a first step to keeping you from
automatically connecting.

The other problem is to find out what is actually connecting you to your
dial-up service. You didn't mention when it would dial-up, whether you were
doing anything at the time or not, and I don't know what programs you may
have on your system, so I can't say what it might be. You might be wanting
to run Lavasoft's Ad-Aware to check for spyware/adware programs that might
be causing this behaviour, or look at what you have running on your system
to see if any of those programs might be causing this. It may even be a
WinXP service that runs automatically at start up that is doing it, and that
might be okay, as long as you turn off the automatic connecting as I
mentioned previously.

A message that I saved from MVP Kelly Theriot:

Right click My Network Places/Properties/Advanced (top
toolbar)/Dial-Up Preferences/Enable Auto-Dial by Location/Uncheck all
locations and check off always ask me before auto dialing. Also,
Disable autodial while I am logged on.

In the Enable Auto-Dial By Location dialog box, select each location
for which you want the automatic dialing feature to operate. Reboot.

Disable or Enable AutoDial (Line 91)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To view the list of names and addresses recorded by AutoDial, type the
following command at a command prompt: rasautou -s

To delete a name or address entry from the list: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\RAS Autodial\Addresses

You can delete any TCP/IP addresses that you see under this key. Note
that AutoDial can use IP addresses, DNS fully qualified domain names
(FQDN), and NetBIOS names.

Thank you so much - just to be specific, should
the "Disable autodial while I am logged on" box be
checked or unchecked?

Thanks again for your help - I really appreciate it!

Thanks - I didn't even think about spyware or adware.
I'm going to try that. I really appreciate your help,
thanks again!
