When I click on my IE shortcut or the icon in the
quickstart tray, an IE browser window opens..then another,
then another... and so on. They open so fast I can't close
them fast enough. Eventually, I run out of memory(I have
512mb). I'm using Opera to access this site at the moment.
I'm running XP Pro and have checked for viruses.
I haven't tried to re-install IE yet. Any suggestions?

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Internet Options -> General
Change your home page to somewhere else. Maybe whatever is currently
set to be your home page is spewing out these multiple instances of IE.

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Security
Unless you have customized the settings, try resetting security for the
Internet Zone to Medium (or maybe High).

You might be infected with something that has hijacked your browser.
When you open IE, what is the home page or whatever page that keeps
opening multiple instances of itself? Is that the home page that you
had specified?

Have you checked for spyware (the cost of trying to get something for
nothing and not be careful about the source of the freebie or not
bothering to read the Terms of Service)? Run Adaware and/or SpyBot to
see if you have some spyware hijacking your browser.

Check if you have any browser helper objects (BHOs) installed in IE that
are suspicious. You can use BHOdemon (free from
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm) to list what BHOs are
installed.

Use msconfig.exe to disable all startup programs, reboot, and see if
opening IE causes all those multiple instances to load. If not,
something you disabled is screwing up - and maybe intentionally.
