IE not working properly

Mike

Hi,

I have several Windows XP PCs that recently started exhibiting a number of
issues which make IE useless. Here are the symptoms:
-with some websites that contain forms(for login, etc), there are buttons on
the form that do not submit when clicked on.
-IE version info in help>about not appearing at all, all field info in
help>about screen blank

-find next button in IE find greyed out making IE find function useless.

The recent change that made this happen (I believe) is I just implemented a
SBS 2003 server and got these PCs joined to a domain. Things I did that
could have cause this are
-copying the old local profile to a new local profile for the domain user,
-enforcing group policy on server to use Windows Classic theme and disable
ability to change on SBS server (this article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;322240 points to
saying that the XP style would cause some problems, but not the classic)

I've tried reverting from my 2 suspicions above with no luck.

I would appreciate a fix for this. I've tried resetting web settings and
changing other IE settings to default, but no fix yet.

Thanks,
Mike

Eliminate any scumware.
CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

**Post your HijackThis log to

may be found on this page:

If nothing there helps, please post back to this thread.

I think spyware could be a possibility, but these PCs were not having these
issues before I started converting them over to use the server(joining a
domain, installing new virus software, etc).

The fact that only a couple PCs so far are like this make me think spyware
may be the problem so I'll go through the work to see if it is infact
spyware causing the problem. I'll post back as soon as I have results
(should be tomorrow).

Thanks,
Mike

I don't think my problem is spyware.

I ran updated version of Ad-aware, Spybot, LSPFix, and CWShredder. Ad-aware
found and remove everything verifying with a second scan. Spy found and
removed(but they came back) 5 DSO Exploits, but I remember reading about
this not being a real threat necessarily.

I looked on Kellys Korner and tried to do re-installs of IE, but they say a
newer version is already installed when I try any of the methods listed
there. It's true XP2 is installed so IE6SP1 will be older, but I want to
force that install if possible. I've already uninstalled and re-installed
XP SP2. In IE, remember that the version info does not display in
help>about.

Can I force an IE6SP1 install? Do you recommend something else?

Thanks,
Mike

Yes! You may have a corrupted TCP/IP protocol stack. Look for
WinsockxpFix.exe which should help you to reset the stack.

Nope, that did not fix it. I still have the problem.

What else? I really think if I could force IE to re-install it might fix
it.

Thanks,
Mike

I have set a registry entry in WinXP so it would think IE was not installed
so I could install IE6. That made the system not able to logon for some
services would not start. I fixed it throught the recovery console and
re-applied SP2, however problem is still there.

Another note. Going to windowsupdate.microsoft.com reveals a blank page.
Other websites are similar in that some parts do not show up. I tried
re-installing sun java and acrobat thinking it might be some plugin as well
as disabling all pluggins. Nothing fixes this issue.

Please help.
