IE not resolving hostname, nslookup returns IP address correctly

I'm trying to troubleshoot the computer of a friend of mine. She has
Adelphia cable internet on Windows 2000. She told me that it had worked

fine until yesterday morning when for no reason, she became unable to
connect to the Internet at all, or use any Internet related programs
(AIM, Outlook). Cable company said problem was not on their end, was
an OS problem.

When I got here, I hooked up a wired D-Link router that she had and
introduced a WinXP computer to this network. The WinXP computer is
using the Internet perfectly after basic router setup. The Win2000
computer can sign on and use AIM but IE will not work in the sense that

typing www.yahoo.com will not resolve to a page. However, if I were to
type in yahoo.com's IP address, IE will load the page. I can obtain
this IP through nslookup on the problem computer. If I try to ping
yahoo.com, gives Unknown host error. If I ping the IP address, it will
work successfully. I am thinking DNS problem. Network connection on
Win2000 is set to obtain addresses automatically, no DNS servers are
listed specifically on the computer or on the router itself. Same setup

on the WinXP computer. I have tried searching various places for
information but cannot find anything on this specific problem.
Attempted flushing DNS with no luck.

I would suspect spyware. specifically, a DNS proxy gone haywire. Do a
full virus and spyware scan, and use the "winsock fixer" (google).

I downloaded and ran LSPFix, but it detected no problems on the system.

You may want to check out the HOSTS file. I have seen HOSTS files
mysteriously added to that messed up all name resolution.
