I am able to make my connection to the internet, although when I try to view
web pages it shows the site not found page, no matter what site i try to
access.
I have done a system restore - this has not helped.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled my internet connection - this has not
worked.
When I try to access a web page it appears to be open a file with a reference
res//c:\windows\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm(hash)http://wannadoco.uk

Note am not sure that the reference i have shown above is completely
accurate, note yes my broadband connection is with wannado.

I would be most grateful for any help any1 can provide

Also should have mentioned that all was working fine up until friday night,
then i shut down and windows installed automatic updates, next day problems!!!

Disconnect SpeedTouch 330, (if that's what you're using), uninstall
SpeedTouch 330 in Control Panel Add/Remove Program, and also, if installed,
uninstall Dr. Speed touch, reboot.

Run your Wanadoo cd, plug in modem when prompted. When finished use the
"SpeedTouch Connection" on Desktop and fill on your login name and password.
Don't forget the @fs at the end of your lgoin name.

Then start IE6

How do I set up a manual connection on Windows XP? (Broadband)
Article ID: kb311
If your current connect has become corrupt, or if you've lost your
dial up networking connection you can create a manual connection by
following the steps below.

Create a new Internet connection

a.. Click on the Start button and then click on Control Panel
b.. Double-click on Network Connections
c.. Click on 'Create a New Connection' on the left hand side of
window
This will open the Internet Connection Wizard now
d.. Click on Next
e.. Make sure that 'Connect to the Internet' is selected (click into
the circle to the left of the text to make a green dot appear)
f.. Click on Next
g.. Make sure that 'Set up my connection manually' is selected
h.. Click on Next
i.. Make sure that 'Connect using a dial-up modem' is selected
j.. Click on Next
k.. You may be asked to select the device you want to use to
connect - if prompted select SpeedTouch USB
l.. Enter the connection name eg 'Wanadoo Broadband' into the box
marked 'ISP Name'
m.. Click on Next
n.. Type the number 0 (zero) into the box marked 'Phone Number'
o.. Click on Next
p.. If prompted select 'Create this connection for anyone use'
q.. Click Next
r.. Enter your username
s.. Enter your password
t.. Confirm password
Remember: your username is everything after the @ sign in your Wanadoo
email address.
For broadband this will take the format yourname.wanadoo.co.uk@fs.
Take care when typing in your password because it is case sensitive.
Remember that APPLE is not the same as apple

a.. Make sure that 'Use this account name and password' is selected
b.. Make sure that 'Make this the default Internet connection' is
selected
c.. Make sure that 'Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this
connection' is not selected.
d.. Click on Next then Finish

The Connection window will now be displayed

a.. Select Properties
b.. Click on the Networking tab at the top and then
c.. Click on Settings
d.. Make sure that none of the three options are selected (so there
are no ticks in any of the boxes) then click OK
e.. Click on Internet Protocol [TCP/IP] in the list at the centre of
the panel, then click on Properties
f.. Make sure that 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain
a DNS server address automatically' are both selected (click into the circle
to the left of the text to make a green dot appear)
g.. Click on Advanced and make sure that 'Use default gateway on
remote network' is selected, and that 'Use IP header compression' are not
selected
h.. Click OK
i.. Click OK then on OK again to save your settings and close the
window
You've now manually set up a Wanadoo Broadband Internet connection on
your computer. All you need to do is check that your new connection is the
default connection.

Thanks Richard, have already tried that, it did not help. altough i did not
reboot after
uninstalling.

Sorry should have mentioned i use windows xp

Hi Linda :-)

Do you have AOL?
http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/shdoclc.htm

also..

Try disabling your firewall and see if that helps. If so, check the
settings.

If still no joy continue.....

Register the following:

Go to Start>Run>enter each of the commands below in the window one at a time
pressing Enter after each one. You should see a message stating that the
file has been successfuly registered after each one, then enter the next:

sregsvr32 Urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
[From Microsoft Knowledge Base Articles 281679 & 823301.]

also...

Check Proxy settings to be sure nothing there is checked.

Do a system restore to a date and prior to the date the update was installed
and see if that resovles the problem. If so, turn off the autoupdate and do
manual updates.

I am having similar problem with Windows 98 & IE 6.

When I try to access a web page it appears to be open a file with a
reference
res//c:\windows\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm

Additional info: doesn't appear to be a network issue. Machine works fine
with home network. Can PING, etc. with no problem.

Hi Glen :-)

This error nearly always means that it can not find the site, so it could be
a DNS problem.

A third-party program or toolbar may be blocking access, or maybe a HOSTS
file.
Go here: Win 98\ME. C:\WINDOWS
Check for a hosts file (just "hosts" not hosts.sam or lmhosts)
Rename your HOSTS file to OLDHOSTS, close out, and see if the problem
persists. The files may be hidden so you may have to enable hidden files:
How to Show Hidden Files
http://snipurl.com/6rl8
Or...see here
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

If not a HOSTS file, check the settings of any other security, privacy,
ad-blocking programs that are running.

Also....your firewall may be blocking your connections,

Go over each application in the lists of your firewall and see if you find
any MS applications blocked and unblocked them. The site of your selected
homepage you have selected may be blocked, thus, IE can't find it.

If you have Zone Alarm:

First.right click on the ZA Icon on the system tray, down by your clock, and
be sure that the "Stop all internet activity" is not checked.

Zone Alarm Pro can block access to Internet

Download, install and run this:
Winsock Fix Utility

WinsockXP Fix for XP
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Also, with instructions, at
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

Also, adware and other types of scumware can cause this problem, make sure
your system is free of any scumware:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Be aware, your Anti-Virus won't detect all types of warez, Trojans, malware,
worms, etc., and neither can other adware or spyware related programs such
as AdAware and SpyBot. They don't have the proper definitions. They must
also be run in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled in order to fully scan
all files. Even if you have run such programs and nothing shows up, it does
not mean your system is clean. It takes a series of programs to fully clean
your machine. Some very aggressive and damaging variants of malware can
replicate themselves repeatedly, or mutate, if not removed properly. Follow
the steps here:

Hope this helps.
