IE not adding http:// prefix to URL

I ran Spybot to remove 15 instances of spyware on my computer. Now when I
type in "www.cnn.com", IE no longer prepends that address with "http://" to
make it "http://www.cnn.com".

I have checked the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix] and it is set to "http://"

Also the registry key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
does have an entry for "www" to be "http://"

Any clues how to get this back to the default behavior?

There is a posting on another thread that seems to have fixed this problem
for me. Go to control panel, and click on add and remove programs. Click on
box at top of page that says "show updates". Scroll down to Windows and find
security update KB908531. Click on remove program and reboot.

Suggest not to remove security update, but rather follow instructions
in Microsoft KB article 918165. They have recognized problem and
posted solution.

Good Luck

I too have just discovered this problem. I'm glad that Microsoft have a Knowledge Base Article on this, but exactly where is it? I've searched the KB site but haven't located it so far...

Many thanks

Yes, I later found the info in that KB article in yet another post. So I
reapplied the Microsoft security fix and then manually edited the registry as
indicated in the article.

And that did fix the problem as it describes with HP's share-to-web software.

Thanks!
