IE is now nigh unusable.

I was having some problems with IE spontaneously shutting down
and, after sending an error report to MS, it was recommended that
I get the newest update.
So I go and get IE 6 SP1 and installed it.
I couldn't have made a worse mistake.
Now, whenever I shift-click to open a link in a new window, a new
browser instance opens up but I get nothing. Nothing in the address
bar and the entire content portion is grey. I select 'View Source', but
get nothing. I can't right click in the content portion at all.

So I go an try to reinstall but get an error message saying that it
detects a newer version and the install aborts. I was a moron (shame
on me for actually trusting MS) and didn't create a restore point before
the install, so there I can't fix it that way. I tried to go to "Add/Remove
Programs" but the SP1 install isn't in the list.

So now, I'm basically hosed. Any link that has a different target is
unusable for me. I can't open in a new window.

Does anyone know what's going on and how I can fix it? Barring that,
does anyone know how I can uninstall IE6 SP1? Barring that, does
anyone know how I can try to do a reinstall or even go back to the
previous version?

Help?

I had the same problems. After someone added a new NT
user, we started having this problem. I tried
reregistering all of the DLLs as suggested by the KB
281679 which didn't help. What worked for me was to go to
dcomcnfg and give myself launch and access permissions in
the default COM security.
This must be due to some patch or something I previously
downloaded but didn't have any problems until the new
user was added.

Good luck.
