Ben

Had a few problems a few days ago. Windows components
went missing,IE explorer wasn't right either. No
viruses....not sure what happened.
Anyways, reinstalled windows XP, everything seems to be
working fine except IE.
I've re-installed it but,it's telling me,"Setup was
unable to install all components. Please close all
applications and try running setup again."
Gives me the same msg when i try and run setup.
Tried the IE tools, used the setup i downloaded off the
net and the one in the IE folder. Everything is updated,
etc., but still, same msg.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx

Had you upgraded to WinXP from an earlier Windows version? Did you enable
either WinXP's built-in firewall or a third-party one? Have you visited
Windows Update since the reinstall? Are you running a reliable anti-virus
application and keeping definitions up to date?

1. Disable your anti-virus application and close all running programs, then
go to Windows Update and install recommended updates.

2. Another poster here who suffered from same problem suggests:
<paste>
Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View; Select "Show hidden files
and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

You will now be able to install all the troublesome components. If
everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder and
the files you moved.

3. Check your system for "hijackware":

Dealing with Hijackware
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm#tshoot
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

Haven't upgraded....just re-installed.
XP firewall isn't enabled.
I've disabled Mcafee firewall.
After reinstalling XP, I did catch up on all updates
again.
I have no virus scan at the moment(I had to uninstall). I
beleive, because of these missing IE componnets, it won't
let me download. I get as far as the download wizard,
press continue, but the download doesn't start.I just
came from the Mcaffe site and used thei free scan, and no
viruses were found.
I tried the "old unistall" thing....didn't work either(
do i put that old uninstall information back in the IE
folder?)
Checked for hijackware....deleted/stopped the few that
were there(adobe acro. reader, cpl others were there).
And my adware and spyware are always up to date, along
with my virus scan( while i had it) and my firewall.
ok, now with all that said...please tell me you have
other options!!
Thanx,
Ben

1a. Enable WinXP's firewall!

1b. Install a reliable anti-virus application (e.g.,
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php). Seek updated virus definitions and
run a full system scan on a regular basis.
