Out of the clear blue, I am having a problem with IE. Whn I start the
program, the browser window opens up for a few seconds and then IE just shuts
down. No error message, nothing.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I began having the same exact problem this morning. Must be some kind of
virus targeting IE. It also will not allow me to open Windows update. I
also have Firefox, which is working fine. Operating System is Windows 2000.

A friend of mine is having the exact same problem. He went as far as
reïnstalling the machine allready, but it didn't help getting wrid of
the problem. He has a small network at home, so I suspect it indeed is
a virus, comming from another machine maybe? The trouble in this line
of thought is that he allready tested McAfee's stinger against it, as
well as TrendMicro's housecall, as well as Norton Antivirus (legally
bought, so working perfectly with all the latest patches and
virusupdates). No computer finds a virus anywhere. No of the machines
in his home are giving the same problemen, and none do find virusses...

I hope anyone finds something to adres this problem. It's boggling me
completely.

Kind regards,

Steph Janssen

I had this problem last night for many hours - then it healed itself???!!!
While trying to get IE to, before the 'healing,' I found that I could access
IE via Control Panel. Then it would operate as usual. IE is my default
opening screen and that's what wasn't working. I don't know what happened to
mess it up and I don't know that I did anything to fix it. It just started
working and worked this morning. I don't know if opening IE via Control
Panel 'reconnected' what was broken or not. Bottom line, everything is as it
should be now. Good luck with yours.

Ok, I was able to open IE by engaging the internet lock on Zone Alarm. Of
course, I wasn't able to connect to a site, but I was at least able to open
the program.

Apparently, connecting to a site is the problem. Sounds like a virus of
some sort.

Ok, I appear to have solved my problem by installing Ad Aware SE 1.06, and
during a new scan. It found 10 critical items that weren't found in the
previous version of Ad Aware that I had installed. Not sure if that scan was
the magic bullet, but the problem has disappeared for the moment.

What was the found malware?

Having the same problem running windows XP sp2 and microsoft antispyware.
using system restore doesn resolve the problem. Will try other antispyware's
software this eve.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be a popup program. Allow popups
and your problem may go away.

In the case of my friend it finally appeared that his AMD K7 was
broken. A replacement processor fixed his problem.

Indeed! You would expect the numerous reinstalls we performed to fail
to. Frankly this is the first time that I've seen a Windows
installation complete on either malfuncioning memory or CPU.... :S Just
our luck :) But the error proved reproducable by placing the cpu in
multiple other motherboards that were compatible with it. Putting a
different (but the same type) cpu in his motherboard did solve his
problem.

Nasty, but found it ;)
