I get this message almost every time I get on the internet. I then have to
restart and repeat the process. Even though I can only get rid of the window
by clicking the do it box, I can usually still work on web sites, etc. - with
the huge error box in the foreground (impossible to do anything to close it
without restarting), moving it out of the way as much as is possible. Athe
same time, get a "Not responding note" when I check status via Ctl Alt Del
and status window is up. MSN Mail also stops responding at times as well, or
fails to connect. All of this popped up after I installed SP2, which took
several download sessions to completely download. Any ideas to stop this
stuff? I would like to go on the internet and stay there, and read my mail
and send, like the old days, you know?

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

Try this first:

If that doesn't work then check for malware or the like. Below are my cookie
cutter clipboard contents... Sorry but they're all I've got ;) They'll be
handy and they're all effective and free. Specifically check the virus,
trojan, and spyware sections.

Firewalls:

www.kerio.com/us/kpf_download.html - Kerio Personal Firewall

Virus:

www.antivir.com - AntiVir
www.clamwin.com - ClamWin

Spyware:

Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta

Trojan:

All of these are free for home use. All of them are acceptable solutions to
your security needs.
Does not provide full real-time scanning engine.

*My understanding CA is available free for a limited time. Please note that
the page says this:
@free software offer expires 2/1/05.@
The number of times it has been given out as a viable option leads me to
believe that this has been extended. You should, of course, verify this on
your own.

Thnx - I'll give this a try. Will come back and advise if any success. I
really appreciate the help.

First eliminate any spyware.

CAUTION!!!!! Removing some spyware can damage the Winsock stact. Before
you try to remove spyware using any of these programs , download a copy of

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:
