ie has encountered a problem and needs to close

i get this porblem after opening up a couple of ie windows, i'm running
xp with sp 2 and IE 6. the sig on the error is: AppName: iexplore.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
ModName: unkown ModVer: 0.0.0.0 OffSet: 76994cab, then after the msg i
open ie again and it seems to lag windows and links don't open up as fast. i
have checked several forums and done multiple fixes none of which have
worked.
i've gone into ms dos and run the regsvr32 prompts for shdocvw.dll,
shell32.dll, oleaut32.dll, actxprxy.dll, mshtml.dll, urlmon.dll
i've installed winsock, disabled third party browser extensions,
disable script debugging, my security settings are on medium.
i thought Norton might have an effect so i went to manage add ons and
disabled all my symantec add ons.
basically i'm at my wits end and there a couple of things that i've
done that i've forgotten. please help. i'm new to this so directions will
have to be pretty specific
