We bought our computer in 2001. We installed more memory
a couple of weeks ago but the computer seemed to still be
so slow. We decided to restore the computer. We restored
it to the factory settings. I went through and downloaded
all of the updates from Microsoft but when I check the
Installation History, several of the updates failed. Now
while we're online, the error message comes up "Internet
Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close".
This happens more often than not. So I need help trying
to figure out what the problem is. Also, I don't know if
this will be of any help, but when we did the restore,
doing the setup, we got to the Windows XP disc and it
wanted us to enter the 25 digit character on the COA. We
don't have a 25 digit character, so we couldn't do it. So
it might not be completely setup. And I don't know what
to do about all of the updates. I tried to scan for more
updates at Microsoft and it says there aren't any crucial
updates. Thanks, Adam

Try the system file checker tool which will need your XP
CD to be inserted for copying needed files from. Just
click the start-run, and type in this; " sfc /scannow "
with that space after sfc. This will run as Windows File
Protection and it checks for either missing or corrupted
windows system files. Also run disk cleanup and the disk
defragmenter tools, as well as scan for viruses, worms,
and for any spyware too to remove from your PC.
