Hello,
I have XP professional SP2,with IE version
6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519.
I have not expierienced any known issues until I downloaded windows security
updates, which included "software distribution service 2.0", and rebooted my
pc. I can open an IE window and use the favorites menu to navigate to
different urls, but if I attempt to left click the dropdown arrow located on
the right side of the address url box, IE completly freezes.I went to
"Tools>Internet Options>Deleted Files including Offline files. I rebooted I
also tried the last System restore point before the "Software Distribution
Service 2.0" was installed. The system restore point fails I assume because I
have a hardware RAID1 for my hdd's. I can open Outlook 2003 and surf to
differenct urls as well as use it's dropdown arrow without any problems, I am
sure it's isolated to the IE application. Also, I do not have any third party
tools installed into IE purposefully to avoid IE issues. I have upto date
Anitivirus software and scan daily for malious code. What do you suggest I
attempt to do next. TIA.

I have the same exact problem, introduced with the updates.
Fortunately the problem does not seem to occur in Opera or FireFox.
;-)

I have the same issues also,

1- Drop Down Box Freezes
2- Cannot navigate to a website by typing in a url in the address bar

Basically after installing the updates, IE becomes useless, unless you
follow existing links or use favorites.

:

I have the same problem. You cannot go back to another system restore
point. IE does not browse some pages - just hangs and clicking the down
arrow on the URL dropdown list results in IE to go into a non-responsive
state. I do not have any additional addins - like Google, Yahoo, etc. Just
IE.

This is one of the first times I have been this very disappointed in
Microsoft. Open to any suggestions.

Thanks.

I found if you hold the CTRL key and the hit enter it will take you to the
page you want. would still like to see the fix soon

Thanks for the workaround Kevin. Glad to know I'm not the only one dealing
with this. I'm like you . . . I hope for a quick fix to the problem . . .
very aggravating.

Thanks again!
Mike

Let's hope the quick is like TOMORROW. I am tech coord for an entire school
district and all 200 of our Windows 2K and XP computers that did the updates
yesterday and today are experiencing this. Imagine 500 students all trying
to use the internet and this happening - I had students lined up and teachers
calling me all day today. I had a wonderful day **NOT** Thanks a lot MS.
Maybe next time we can do a little QA before we release a major BUG. PLEASE
FIX ASAP!

UPDATE - You can remove Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531) to possibly
fix the problem:

1. Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs
2. Make sure the "Show updates" box at the top is checked.
3. Find Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531) and click it.
4. Click the Remove button.
5. Click Finish to restart computer.

The issue, as far as I can tell, has to do with the failure to
automatically insert http:// in the address bar. Try simply typing that
in front of the url and see if that doesn't solve the problem (it's
what IE does when you hold ctrl key and hit enter with cursor in the
address bar as suggested by another user)

Perhaps the issue is caused by the update blowing away this registry
key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete

This is the exact same problem as:

The error was introduced in KB908531 and can be backed out as proposed by
"Mike" in your posting chain. Of course, the vulnerability described in
MS06-015 will still exist until KB908531 is fixed and installed.
