IE Freezes up

I am running IEv6 on XP Home/SP2. Intermittently, IE freezes up, and
requires a reboot to clear it (it happens, on average, about once every other
day). We've eliminated viruses/spyware/adware/malware as an issue. We've
removed cookies and temp files. We've run Disk Cleanup and Defrag. Windows
updates are up-to-date. We ran sfc /scannow. We've even uninstalled, and
reinstalled, IE. Nothing has stopped this once-in-a-while occurence. Does
anyone have any ideas?
 
Do you mean the screen locks up (mouse doesn't even move) and you have to
reboot, or does just IE stop responding? If the latter, can't you stop it
in Task Manager?
 
The mouse continues to function. I can actually start some other programs,
but ONLY start them, because they immediately freeze up as well. Task
manager is ineffective. I can click Start \ Turn Off Computer, but even that
freezes, and I am left with using the power button on the Tower to shut down.

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
 
This may be caused by spyware/malware that's gotten installed on
your system. Use Ad-Aware, Windows Defender and/or Spybot Search & Destroy
to remove it.

If no joy, in IE go to Tools...Internet Options...Advanced tab, Browsing
section, uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions", click Apply, click
Okay, reboot. If that solves your problem, then more troubleshooting is
needed to find out exactly which program, or Browser Helper Object (BHO) is
causing this problem. You don't want to leave it at that, as some BHOs are
useful or necessary - like Adobe Acrobat for reading .pdf files or an
essential component of Norton AV. Get BHODemon -

Disable all items, and then gradually replace one or two at a time to narrow
down the culprit.

If all the above fails, then the problem could be something new that the
