My operating system is Windows XP home Edition Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack
2 Build 2600. I have Internet Explorer version 6. When I try to go to Web
Sites that have a .pdf in the address, my IE freezes. Some times my Adobe
Reader 7 opens and then IE freezes. In one of the responses to one of the
questions about the IE becoming locked up when trying to open pdf files, the
respondent suggested that a solution was to remove the Adobe Reader and
reload it, so I tried to do that. However, when I went to Start-Control
Panel- Add or Remove Programs-Adobe Reader 7, I could not remove the Adobe
Reader Program and I got the following message. “This patch package could not
be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can open it, or
contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows patch
package.†Next, I tried to download Adobe Reader 8 to replace my older
version of Adobe Reader 7. The process almost completed when I got an error
message that said “Adobe Reader Error 1714. The older version of Adobe Reader
8.1.0 could not be removed. Contact your technical support group.†Remember
my add-remove program said I had Adobe Reader 7. I can open a pdf file that
is on my hard drive. The pdf file opens Adobe Reader 7. When I go to
Start-Search, and search for Adobe Reader 8, I find two folders. One says
Adobe Reader 8 and the other says Adobe Reader 8_. How can I resolve this
problem? My main problem is that I want to open Web sites that have pdf in
the address.

Uninstall all versions of Adobe (Acrobat) Reader and then either install the
newest version from Adobe or install Foxit:

Frank, Thanks for your quick response. I really appreciate your time and
effort.

I know my original message was long winded, but I tried to be complete with
my question. I will re-iterate some of my original remarks in order to
clarify my statements.

I tried to remove Adobe Reader 7 using the Add/Remove Program but as my
original message states I could not remove it. You used the word uninstall.
Is that a different process then Add/Remove? As I also stated, I tried to
download Adobe 8 but I was also prevented from doing that.

If I install Foxit, will this confuse my computer. In other words, since I
cannot remove Adobe, will it cause contention between Adobe and Foxit in
trying to open pdf file?

Foxit should just take over from Adobe.
Although you might try reinstalling Adobe 7 and then uninstalling it from
Add/Remove Programs.
