XP Pro SP2 IE6 I a recent problem - I cannot download files e.g. clicking a
URL with a .pdf download produces a red top left corner of blacnk screen -
this happens with a wide range of file types - any ideas

Hi,
Turn on the Windows Firewall (from Security Center or Control Panel) and
disable Norton Internet Security.

Next, clear the IE cache. IE> Tools> Internet Options> General> Delete
files (and delete offline content when that dialog pops up) It's often
recommended that the TIF folder be kept at about 50 MB (Settings.)

Other possinbilities at http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/40.html
Specific to PDF files: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ie/pdf.htm

Hope this helps,

Hi Don - thank you for your quick reply - sadly none of these options made
any difference so I am really puzzled now - any further ideas?

Andy

Hi,
Corrupted cache?

Try deleting the Temporary Internet Files folder for the affected user
account. Make sure that you can see hidden files (Folder Options> View) Then
login as another user with administrator privileges, or from an
administrator account and delete the affected TIF folder from Windows
Explorer. It will be at [C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files]

You would not be able to delete this folder when logged in as
yourself- it's "In use." You should be able to delete it from the
Administrator account.

I would disable (as a test) any third-party program (security, ad-blocking,
etc) that might be causing this.

Internet Options> Security> Internet Zone> reset to Default.

I don't know what else I would try.
