IE won't start. Get error message
"instruction @ 0x73528315 referenced memory @ 0x01fa3768. The memory could
not be read"

I am running SP2 for XP and have downloaded and installed all updates as of
9 Feb 05.

Had a conflict earlier with a Sonic file. Stopped Sonic from loading and
now the above error message prevents IE from starting.
I also had deleted an additional winsock.dll file that was in the C:\i386
directory. The program worked once, then back to the above error message.

Running Dell Inspiron 5150 with phone modem connection to internet. I can
run CompuServe and MSN dialup without problems, just can't start IE.

Any ideas?

Hi Jan
Thanks for the info. However those articles are for Windows 2000 users and
the solution is to download the latest service pac.
I am running windows XP with the latest SP. I would think the problem
discussed (inability to handle long file extensions) would have long been
solved by XP.

One good thing, I can shut down the computer (not warm reboot) then turn it
back on and the problem will go away, sometimes. Oh Wo of Wos, it's
intermittent thus even harder to solve.

Let me know if you have any other ideas, I'm willing to try anything.

Hi Jay :-)

Well... it has been the case in many areas that what works for the W2K works
as well for XP. But...not always. :-))

As you mentioned that you had an issue with Sonic and an aborted download,
and a winsock issue, there's a chance you could have some corrupted or
broken files. If you have not done a repair of IE in XP, you might try that
and see if that levels out the playing field again. Here are the proper
instuctions for doing that that in XP:

How do I repair Internet Explorer in Windows XP?

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP

And, just in case you need it:

Unable to install IE6 on XP
http://www.tek-tips.com/gfaqs.cfm/lev2/67/lev3/70/pid/779/fid/1586

You will need to immediately visit the WIndows Update and reinstall any
necessary patches and updates after the repair.

That is about the only other thing I can suggest at this point.

Hope this helps

Jan :)

Hi Jan:
Since I have SP2 installed, the only solution I can see is to uninstall and
reinstall SP2. The referenced "repair" articles were for SP1. Since
reinstalling SP2 and all the updates is quite involved, I am going to
troubleshoot a bit more.

I can get the program running now. I have found possible conflicts with

Netcraft Toolbar
MSNAPPAU.EXE file from MSN dialup service
DaDapp.exe from Dell Access Direct program

If anyone else reading this has had problems with any of the above programs,
please let me know.

Jan, thanks for the links to those articles.

Sorry I can't give any more info on your problem, but, I have not had any
experience with those files, or Dell. I hope that someone else here will be
able to provide information that will be of more help. :
Good luck! :-)

Use the ERT Error Signature (or the eventvwr) to find out what module
you are crashing in. I can't see one off-hand which has a preferred base
at 0x73520000 so I suspect it will be malware or some incompatible
third-party extension, either of which you should remove and then try to
recreate your problem.

Robert:
I got it working again and have identified the problem. However I
appreciate the response.

Hi Jay :-)

For the benefit of other readers who might have the same or similar problem,
would you please post what the cause of the problem was?

Thank you! :-)

Jan:)

Hi Jan:
Yes I should do that but I don't want to lead anyone astray. The problem
was solved when I uninstalled Netcraft Toolbar.

One problem here. Netcraft toolbar and IE6 are running just fine on my Dell
Dimension. They won't work together only on the Dell Inspiron. Don't think
its the computer that makes the difference. Rather think it is the software
I have loaded there.
