I went away for two weeks and left my computer in the hands
of my parents. When I came back I found that there were
over 400 pop up programs on my system. I first used
Ad-Aware 6.0 to clean them out, and then finished off with
Spybot Search and Destroy. These two programs worked great
in terms of getting rid of the pop-ups, however I seem to
have another problem now..

When I open internet explorer or "My Computer" or any other
directory (IE based form) my computer sits for about 3
minutes before whatever I opened actaully shows up. And in
the case of IE once it does finally open it just freezes
up. Does anyone know any solution to this, other than
formatting my system which I would like to try and avoid at
this time.. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall IE but
no luck. I have also defragmented and run antivirus
programs. Thanks!

Try looking in "Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Lan
Settings" and make sure the "Proxy Server"
and "Automatically Detect" options are OFF (unless you
actually have a proxy, of course). Sometimes that will
really slow the system down, looking for a "settings"
source that isn't really there.

Note that issue is with Internet Explorer, and the web,
and I don't know if it would ever affect "My Computer".
It might, though, since "My Computer" _can_ be used to
access files on a LAN.

The only other thing _I've_ heard, that might cause a
similar problem, would be an adware program that you
should have already successfully cleaned out.

Are you really low on diskspace on your paging drive
(usually C:\)?

You might try opening Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL in
WinXP, or "Taskmgr.exe" from a command prompt), and
noting all the running tasks (the Processes Tab). I do a
screen-dump of it (ALT+PRT_SCR), for convenience.

Compare it to what's on the list when Internet Explorer
is open, and search on Yahoo or Google, for anything you
can't readily identify.

You should be able to find one of several sites that list
the source or purpose of each task running. You can also
use Task Manager to "end" processes, and see if that
helps. Be careful! Ending some processes may crash your
computer. Do your research first.
