IE performs Ok to all intent and purpose yet each time I manually close it,
up pops the error message..IE has encountered a problem and needs to close.
(I can click for more detail and receive, amonst other things -offset 02797
ab0)

What I do not understand is why when IE is responding it should report an
error when in fact I am closing it down, or likewise when closing hotmail
or a web page which has used IE.

I have XP SP2- and normally use the AOL browser. However when accessing
hotmail it automatically accesses IE6 as do many web pages. I know for
certain when I perform a closing operation, up will pop the error message. I
find it strange and a annoying so would welcome any help to tackle the cause
of the problem

Hi,
A third-party program add-on, BHO (browser helper object,) toolbar, etc is
causing this. From IE> Tools> Manage add-ons, disable non-microsoft add-ons.
Note: I've seen the AOL Toolbar cause this.

You may have to dig deeper and look at all processes/applications that are
running when you close IE.

The specific DLL listed in "more detail" may point to the problematic BHO or
add-on.

Do you routinely scan for malware?

Yes, that did it. Many thanks.

First I disabled the AOL Toolbar but that alone did not prevent the error
message. I then decided to go for all the obvious third party add ons like
Yahoo, eBay, Norton and tried again. Lo and behold, no error message. I
came out of IE and tried again two or three times, and the error message has
not re-appeared. I realise I could by a process of elimination enable and
disable in turn to see the offending add-on, but for the moment I am content
to let things remain as they are.

As for the routine scanning for malware, spyware etc, yes regularly and when
I have a poarticular problem I go into hyperdrive!
