"IE Encountered a problem" only when typing in web address field

I'm using a ThinkPad laptop running Windows XP. I've had it for several
months with no problems. The only changes I'm aware of (my kids do use it as
well) are automatic updates for IE and Norton. For the past week, if I type
an address in the IE address bar get the above error message and IE shuts
down. I don't have a problem opening pages from Favorites, I don't have a
problem if I type the address in the search field and click on the result,
and I don't have the problem if I use AOL Explorer accessing it through AIM.

This is more of an inconvenience than a show-stopper, but I don't like not
knowing why it's not working properly, and I'm concerned that the problem may
grow as I had trouble restarting the computer last night. There are several
warnings in my event log of "...COM+ Event System failed to fire the
ConnectionMade..." and several information entries that say"The description
for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( RegSrvc ) cannot be found. The local computer
may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to
display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the
/AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for
details. The following information is part of the event: Service started."

Any help would be appreciated. sherriberi62(removethis)@hotmail.com.

Hi,
Those symptoms might indicate the presence of malware (adware, spyware,
parasites, etc)

Thank you for your reply. That is the first thought that occured to me.
Once the problem started my first step was to make sure my Norton anti-virus,
my Spybot Search & Destryoy, and my Ad-Aware had the most recent updates and
run a scan from each of them. Other than the ususual cookies that seem to
accumulate between scans nothing was found.

I am also experiencing the same problem on my Dell desktop. It only comes up
when I manually enter the web address. I'm using Avast virus protection and
running Microsoft Defender for an Anti-Spyware program. Both Avast and
Defender say the machine is clean. When I checked for details, it mentioned
that the ModName was "yshortcut.dll" and the ModVer was 2005.11.10.2

It is very annoying, but not the end of the world. If anybody can help,
that would be great!

Uninstall Yahoo Companion and/or the Yahoo toolbar.

removing Yahoo Toolbar alone didn't help. Then I deleted about 10 programs I
either wasn't familiar with or no longer used (including Yahoo Mail and Yahoo
Installer) and now all is well.

Thanks Frank!
