We have a web-enabled application that require MSIE 5.5 or 6. All of the
printing from the application is from MSIE (we dont launch MS Word or
anything like that). The majority of printed pages are standard web pages to
standard LaserJet printers, printing on Letter sized sheets of paper.
However, some users must also print from a Label Module to a special Label
Printer (Eltron / Zebra TLP 2844's and the like) that will print out little
labels, usually 4" x 1". Since all print jobs are communicated thru MSIE, we
are having a problem with MSIE's PAGE SETUP "Remembering" the margin settings
for one or the other types of printers when users flip print jobs back and
forth. The orientation is always ok, the header and footer is ok, even the
Paper Size and Source stay constant, but those pesky margins keep inheriting
the setting of the previous printer and gives them to all other printers.
Example: User will go in and create some labels on the web app, and go to
print them. They select the label printer from their list, and see that
within properties the correct margin for a label (which in our case, we
always want the margins set to zero). They can then print out label after
label with no problem. However, as soon as they try and print a letter-sized
page or report from the application, the margins are still set to zero (for
labels). MSIE recognizes that the size (letter) and orientation and
everything is correct for this new letter sized print job, but it inherits
the ZERO margin setting for labels (another printer previously selected).
This obviously then distorts the printed letter (usually cutting off info),
and makes the user go into PAGE SETUP within MSIE and manually enter new
margins. They then have to print again. And of course, now that they did
that , though only for the LETTER SIZED printer we use, when they go and try
to print to the label (4" x 1" printer), the inherited margins from the
previous printer comes over and messes up the label. But MSIE always
recognizes what the size (letter or 4" x 1"), apper source, orientation, and
header and footer information is ! Why wont MSIE recognize distinct margin
settings for various printers selected? The work around is every user must
go and change the margins to fit that specific print job, and we the
developers are catching a whole bunch of flak. Is there any way that we can
get MSIE to recognize margin settings for different printers ? Thank you in
advance for any assistance you could provide.
