IE does not detect network connection?

I have a problem with XP Pro on laptops that I can't seem
to resolve. I have several users who have varied
(different makes and models) laptops with Win XP. They
use a dial-up connection to access our servers remotely.
The problem seems to be when they are connected to the
LAN in the building. They can connect to the internet
fine for a while. But then they will get a dial-up
networking box when they launch IE, or even try to go to
a different page (sometimes closing the dial-up box
several times will load the page).

I checked the internet options to make sure that it is
set to dial whenever a connection is not present. I
don't want to set it to never dial a connection, since
unfortunately we are relying on dial-up for remote access
currently. Any ideas?

I would have to guess that your network may be running
into some serious collisions that result in the computers
not seeing the entwork connection. On a non-busy part of
the day, I would disconnect some computers from the
network (just unplug the Ethernet cables from the hub),
and see if the culprit computers have issues.
