IE does not close

IE will not always close. Task Manager will show many instances of the
'iexplore' running. Have to manually end processes for IE to close. Event
viewer also shows multiple entries as this:

Hanging application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, hang module
hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

How do I fix this? Running XP SP2 with all updates.

Hmm... XP Pro SP2 shows - on the processes tab - (regardless of the number
of IE windows open) a single instance of iexplore.exe though with additional
applications it's eating a lot more RAM and CPU cycles will fluxuate
according to usage or dynamic/active content. So, the first thing I'm going
to ask is... Well... Obvious. <g> Did you do a good deep scan for malware?

If you set IE to open new windows in a new process, you get one iexplore.exe
for each IE you have open. I have this on my XP Pro SP2 machine here.

Yes I do. I run Ad-Aware, SpyBot Search & Destroy, Spy Sweeper, and AVG Pro.

Also, about the same time I noticed the problem with explorer hanging and
not being able to close, When I click on a link, it takes IE about 5-8
seconds to open which is a lot slower that it used to be.

Bob

True, but the problem is trying to close IE and it won't. I have to go to
Task Manager and manually stop the iexplore processes and I also get the
errors in event viewer as noted above.

XP Pro SP2 here. IE settings set to not reuse windows for launching
shortcuts. 6 IE Windows open. Only one listed? What am I doing wrong???
*curious now* Not on the applications tab - on the processes tab - only one
listed. I'd really recommend a malware scan and perhaps, if that doesn't
work, a re-installation of IE.

It's nothing to do with that setting, it's about *processes* not reusing
*windows*. I have the reuse windows option ticked, and still get 1
iexplore.exe process for each IE window. Machine is clean, and has never
been infected with anything (systems are locked down nice and tight here at
work, and check regularly, multiple times a day).

You can turn this option on and off in the registry. It's something that was
around in IE5.x as an option in the IE settings, I can't remember how I set
this in IE6 but it was some time ago.

That sounds like a valuable tweak. I can't say that I've ever played with
that one before. I think, and thanks for sharing the link, that if that
would stop all browser windows from closing when IE crashes (as it will do
once in a while) that it'd be a fairly valuable tweak. I don't even see it
in X-Setup Pro. The site says it's normally set based on RAM. I checked
three PCs (two XP, one home one pro, and a 2k box) and none of them had that
setting enabled, in place, or disabled for that matter. It does look
interesting and inviting, I'll have to play with it at some point so thanks
for the heads up.

It does indeed prevent all IE windows from being closed if one crashes. Only
the window related to the IE process that dies is closed, leaving the others
running.

I've actually realised that it wasn't this PC I set it on - it was my last
one, which ran W2K Pro. This PC was supplied with it already set by the OEM
installer.

It seems to be pretty non-volitile? I haven't had IE crash yet to see the
results. I haven't really tried to see them. If it works out okay then I'll
script it in VBScript and post it somewhere on the site. Actually that
probably won't happen until after the new year has started when we add an IE
and OE section... Ah, the fun...

As each IE window runs in it's own process, a crash in one won't affect the
others. It's rare that I get an IE crash anyway, but it can be annoying if
it happens when I've got a lot open at once that I need to be keeping an eye
on. I tend to run a few web based reports on our intranet and internet
servers, and at least if I get a crash from browsing somewhere else - for
instance, the dreaded Flash.ocx crash - then I don't have to go and start up
all my reports again.

is there a way to keep ur toolbars e.g., yahoo, google and have the internet
explorer process close automatically?
