IE crashes

Dear Jan, since I got you involved to this ... mess, but also for anybody
else who has the same problem (ie, every 4-5 times you call IE in XP-Pro, it
opens blank white and needs be terminate), here's how I handled the problem
and it seems to be working now...but I still have to test some more (did not
crash yet...).

First, run all spyware/adaware etc that Jan suggested me in safe mode. These
programs include Adaware, Spybot, and SpySweeper, all of them freely
available on the WWW.

Then use regedit and go to
hkey local machine
system
currentcontrolset
services

and delete Winsock and Winsock2.

Then reboot and use WinSockXPFix to restore (once you reboot).

Also try to "clean" you TCP/IP from the command (dos) prompt by typing:

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

As I said, IE has not crashed (suspiciously) yet so I assume the system got
cleaned up. Most probably it's what Jan said, that is, some spyware corrupted
many registries and IE was swamped.

Jan, again I appreciate your time and effort to assist me in this issue. All
the best!

PS: IE still crashes but VERY occasionally, like once every 20 times I call
it, which is much much better than 1 out 4.

PSS: PLUS: another observation is that IE opens in my Yahoo! homepage and
crashes. When I have it open, lets say, to Google, it did not crash.
Recently, Yahoo! updated their layout etc for their page. Do you think this
may relate on how my IE reads/executes the Java, plugins etc? If yes, any
idea how to update to the latest Java scripts for IE?

Hi andreas :-)

Glad to hear you are making some headway. You're doing a very good job. :-)

I'm not sure, but, for this, you might try the following and see if it will
help:

IE shuts down without warning
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_5.htm#shuts_down

or.......

Resets all the IE functions - for windows, hangups,

Start> Run> Paste this
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll

and then do the same with each one of the following..

regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

Disable any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referer" or contains
entries that are blocking access to the desired site.

A HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the
desired site.

Any Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required" Cookies.

Pop-up blockers that are stripping header\url info.
Sometimes a damaged index.dat file can cause this - this procedure will
delete the index.dat file which can't be deleted from windows - when you
reboot windows creates a new clean one.

Check the date and time on your computer ...if it's wrong, cookies will
not be accepted and you will not be able to log in to some sites.

Also, now would be a very good time to revisit the Windows Update site and
install any needed patches.

For this, you can try the following and see if it will help:

Update Video Driver

Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
Click on Device Manager
Find Display Monitor and click on the + next to it
Double click on the file listed

Here you will find the information on your video driver. Then go to the
website for mfg. of the video driver and look for the update to
download and install.

also

Try reducing hardware acceleration at control panel, display, settings,
advanced, performance

and.........

You cannot open a new Internet Explorer window or nothing occurs after you
click a link:

Remove Flash from Add/Remove programs, including all registry entries for
it. Reboot, then go to Macromedia's site. Since it is Flash based you should
get the dialog to install Flash.

or.........................

It could be related to the popup blocker in SP2 as part of their new
security, as well as they no longer support JavaScript. Try the following
and see if it helps:

The popup blocker installed with SP2 is simple to turn on and off and is
turned on by default. It shows up down in the status bar of IE and a simple
right click gives you the option to enable/disable the blocker. One nice
feature is that you can enable/disable popups for certain sites rather than
just arbitrarily enable or disable them for all sites. See:

Internet Explorer Popup Manager

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Jan :)
