IE crashes frequently on XP

I have IE6 on XPSP2, all updates installed. Malware scans find nothing. No
hijack symptoms.

My problem is that IE will frequently freeze up, usually but not always
after closing a window. The progression of symptoms is always identical.
First, the hourglass cursor appears, and the page becomes unresponsive. Then
if I move the cursor to the title bar, the Maximize box becomes disabled.
The Minimize and Close boxes do not change. After a few more seconds, "Not
responding" appears in the title bar.

If I have any other IE windows open at the time, they continue to operate
normally for ten or fifteen seconds, then they begin to exhibit the same
symptoms as the first window.

This happens several times per day, sometimes two or three times per hour. I
uninstalled Flash, thinking that might be causing the problem, but no help.
(I left it off because I enjoy not getting tons of that awful Flash
advertising!) I have no other BHO's installed that I'm aware of, unless you
count QuickTime and Acrobat Reader.

Anyone have ideas?

if you havent run adaware and spybot. i had my ie6 crash on me the other day
i ran all the scans even tried to reinstall ie6 i downloaded from here and
the scans found nothing and i couldnt reinstall ie6. so i just rebooted and
its working again. i dont know why. but i also dont have sp-2 installed
either. and i wont for some time till they get the bugs worked out of it.
you know, only a couple weeks after they issued it they issued a patch for it
cause it was screwed up. and i heard they were releasing a final code for it
at the end of the year. so im waiting. cause its a known fact sp-2 is causing
a lot of conflict issues with a lot of people. and microsoft says only 1 in
10 computers will have a problem. i think its a little more than that. more
like 4 out of 10. anyway, i think sp-2 is causing some problems, but im by
far no expert. just my opinion, for what its worth. i would unistall sp-2
and cleanup the registry run my scans have a good virus and firewall prg. and
keep windows updated with only the sp-1 for now. but thats just me and maybe
a few thousands of others. hopefully someone on here can help you fix it
without doing what i said, i hope so. but i dont trust the sp-2 yet.
everywhere i go and look in forums here and there they all say the same thing
i find its about a 50/50 deal on hate and like of sp-2. good luck

Hi,
Just to be sure that the machine is malware free:
Try BHODemon 2.0: http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm (safe &
easy.)

Then CWShredder, Ad-aware & Spybot http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Then look at any programs that might be causing a problem with IE. Look at
ad-blockers, toolbars, security/privacy programs, etc. The anti-virus
programs have been known to cause a conflict with IE. You may have to
reinstall your AV or another program.

Thanks to all, but:

1. I had the problem before I installed SP2. I was hoping SP2 would fix it.
2. Ad-Aware finds nothing but cookies.
3. BHO Demon finds nothing but Adobe Acrobat, MS Money, and Norton
Antivirus. (All are up to date.)
4. I have already reinstalled IE6, trying to fix the problem. It didn't
help.

Any other ideas?

Try disabling all NAV components in MSCONFIG> Startup. Restart. If that
helps, reinstall NAV. Did you try disabling other programs?
