No way to get around this. Reinstalled XP. Tried to
uninstall IE, which I couldn't do because the Connection
Wizard was used by "another application". Something must
have gone into the registry... Tried to clean it up. No
joy. Please help! Thanks.

From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions." That should allow IE to open.

Run CWShredder from http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html It's been
the most helpful with this problem. CWShredder is only about 125 KB so it
could be downloaded from another machine onto a floppy disk.

Search for and remove other malware and note the security tips at:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.

I HAVE RUN PROGRAMS FOR SPY WARE ,ADD WARE REMOVAL , IT REMOVED SOME PROGRAMS FROM REGISTRY , I REMOVED ALL ANTI POP UP PROGRAMS AND TRIED TO REINSTALL THEM AND STILL NOTHING AS SOON AS I CHECKD THE BOX TO ENABLE THIRD PARTY BROWSER COMES BACK TO SAME .NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK .ANY OTHER IDEAS.HELP APPRICIETED.

Don. Thanks for your help. Just finished doing all that you
suggested, but still no joy... I also tried to run IE6
setup, newest version from MS. Tells me that a "more
recent" version of IE is already in the system! Setup
consequently aborts... Am stuck. If you have any other
suggestions, theyv are MOST welcome.

Go to http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/IEFAQ.htm Look for "How to reinstall..."

Did you run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot?

Disabling third party browser extensions is an emergency measure to get IE
working again. You should run Ad-aware, Spybot and CWShredder to remove the
malware which caused the problem. Browser extensions should then be
re-enabled.
