Whenever I type a url in the IE address bar and hit Enter key or Go button,
IE will crash. The only way for me to go to a web site is to choose it from
my favorites or google it and then click on the link.

This problem started happening after one of the earlier updates. Can't
remember which one.

I use IE 6.0 and Win XP SP1.

Thanks.

Is the machine fully up-to-date at Windows Update? Is Automatic Updates
enabled? Any reason in particular that you've not yet installed WinXP SP2
(NB: I wouldn't do so until resolving your current problem.)

Support for WinXP SP1 ends Oct-06.

yes, it is up to date. Plus I have the latest Norton antivirus and personal
firewall protection. I haven't installed Win XP SP2 because I heard "horror
stories" about it. I plan to upgrade to Vista later.

Anyway, I am using Firefox in the meantime and it works fine. I would like
to keep using IE but I can't use it to visit new sites because it will crash
whenever I type in the url and hit Enter/Go. IE works fine if I click on my
Yahoo! bookmarks from My Yahoo! home page.

labear,

It sounds to me that your browser has been hijacked.

1. Download hijackthis from http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
2. Install hijackthis on your C: drive.
3. Open the program and click on Do a system scan and save a logfile.
4. Save the logfile.
5. Visit http://www.hijackthis.de/
6. Either copy and paste your logfile contents into the space provided, or
7. Click on the Browse button and locate your logfile.
8. Click on Analyze
9. Wait a few minutes and the results will be displayed.
10. Follow the instructions for the "Nasty" entries.

It is inconceivable to me that the rumors of "horror stories" would cause
you to delay making the jump to the more secure system.

Thank you both for the suggested fixes. They did not work.

I updated to Win XP SP2 and ran Windows Update. I installed and ran Windows
Defender. I also followed the aumha.net fix related to HP Share-to-Web (I
have a HP photo scanner). I do have the HP Share-to-Web program folder but I
never installed the program. All I have is the wizard which I never ran.
Still, I ran the registry fix but no good.

I finally upgraded to IE 7 Beta and the problem went away.
