IE cpu usage

IE sometimes uses 100% cpu and the only way to stop this
is to kill the IE task. This happens when I visit some
web pages, what is going on???

I, too, encounter the same problem, but all we ever seem to get is the link:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Which is useless, since I've done all that. It has been my experience that
the content of certain sites (www.theweatherchannel.ca for example) kill the
browser (100% cpu), while others (fark.com, google.ca, etc. etc.) don't. I
dual boot between XP home and pro (with the same SPs and hotfixes), and
don't experience the problems with pro at all.

It seemed to happen in mid-August, I assume after a Microsoft update. I'd
really like an answer to this problem.

Windows version?
Do you have anything else running that should also be using the CPU?
What program are you using to monitor CPU usage?

My apologies in advance for butting in on this thread: but I'm running XP
Home SP1, running task manager to view cpu stats. If you see my previous
post, I am not encountering the same problems with XP Pro (dual boot) SP1.

Some issues here.

My WinXP Home does the same. Since it doesn't cause any problem I conclude
that it's a reporting anomaly. I know that the System Monitor in WinXP was
notoriously wrong on CPU usage. I confirmed that by running WinTop.

Frank,
Even if there is a reporting anomaly, it doesn't explain a web page taking
60 seconds to load in Home, versus <5 in Pro. And the CPU really does max
out - no other program can do anything until IE finally finishes what it was
trying to do.

Tim, I have had the same problem in Windows XP Pro, and I fixed it by using
system restore. I never learned what caused it, but this did fix it.

Wayne

Thanks, Wayne.

Interesting ...
After your system restore, were you prompted to do any Windows Updates? I'm
wondering if one of mine didn't take and I didn't notice. I'm reluctant to
do the "uninstall IE" registry hack, and I don't want to do a restore to a
point 5+ months ago!

First eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

XP pro, using task manager to observe, have seen this on
several machines with same software version, really bogs
down system performance, this is what led me to task
manager to see what process was hogging cpu and it was
iexplore.exe 95-100% processor usage, even if I close all
iexplore windows it does not stop the problem, only if I
kill the task?????

and yes I check for syware and trojans regularly with
several kinds of software that are kept updated also
