Thanks for the info. None of the options fixed my problem.
Looks like I may need to reinstall XP sp2.

Hi Frank :-)

Yes....you will need to uninstall the SP2 first in order to complete the
repair/reinstall. If you should get the error message that a newer version
is installed, try the following to reset the Registry key to allow the
reinstall.

NOTE FOR SP2: If you have SP2 installed you will first have to uninstall
it before doing the steps below. Then do the Registry steps or run the
utility as described as follows:

Unable to Install Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304872/en-us

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q318378
Scroll down to Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer
already installed on this system. Setup cannot continue. (in red print)

or ..

Step-by-step instructions for a manual fix: If you have SP2, uninstall it
before doing the following:

First, go to Start>Run>type in regedit and hit enter
Click on File on the toolbar and click Export to back up your Registry.
Make sure you make a not of where it is saved in case you need to restore
it.

To reset the IsInstalled value to 0 (zero):

Go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Active Setup>Installed
Components>scroll down to {89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}]

Here are the "How to" steps to reset the value:

When you have clicked on the above {…} file, scroll down to "IsInstalled" in
the right side panel and double click on it. A dialog box will open with a
window that has a 1 in it. To replace the 1, just type 0 (zero) to replace
the 1, click OK and close.
Then try the install again.

Or ..should you not feel comfortable working in the Registry yourself,
download the utility file at the link below, then double click on it to run
it and it will automatically reset the "IsInstalled" value to 0 (zero) for
you. Then try the install again.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm (line 114, right)

After the successful reinstall and the reinstall of the SP2 go immediately
to the Windows Update website and let it scan your computer for any
necessary updates.

Hope this helps.

Yes. I have done so on both my machines when necessary. However, there are
those who have had a problems. I think you will be fine as long as you
print out the instructions first and follow all the steps carefully.

I would, however, advise that you install FireFox temporarily before doing
so, in case you do encounter a problem. You can uninstall it afterwards if
you wish. I keep it installed as a backup in case of a problem with IE and
I can't access the Internet for necessary information.

If you do encounter a problem, or need additional help or information, just
post back here and we'll help you through it. <s>
