Hi all, last week I started up IE6 and noticed I had to log into all my
favorite sites again. Most of my settings had not been saved. This problem
has continued and I've been trying to fix it, having a rough time of it.
IE doesn't seem to be reading cookie information. I've been watching my
Temporary Internet Files, and when I visit a site and login, the cookie gets
written. I will stay logged in if I keep the browser open, even if I go away
and revisit the site, but if I close IE and come back, I have to log in
again. The cookie will still be there in my TIF folder, but it doesn't seem
to do any good. Also, if I remember correctly, I used to be able to open
cookies in Notepad. Now I can't. If I drag a cookie to an open Notebook
window, I get "System can't find the file specified".
The only preceeding problems was that IE would eat up alot of my memory, and
hang stuff up, not close when I asked and was generally misbehaving, so I
opened the task manager and stopped it that way a few times.
Here's what I've done (not in order):
* I did a scan with Ad-Aware and found some critical stuff so I took care of
those, also ran two other malware scanners and found nothing else. it helped
the haging and memory issue, but not the cookie problems. I actually did
this first off.
* Repaired IE6
* Fully updated Windows XP through Windows Update
* Cleared TIF, History, and Cookies
* Checked my system date
* Went from Custom Level of Privacy to Medium
* Then Overrode the Cookie handling to accept first and third party cookies,
and allow session cookies
* Added sites I was having problems logging into to "Per Site Privacy
Actions" and "Allowed All"
* Checked my Trend Micro PC-Cillan app for cookie control/block, etc. I
couldn't find anything.
I've stopped short of reinstalling IE6, should I?. Does anyone have any
other ideas?
Thanks!
