This generally occurs using google after I've done a search. After
clicking one of the ensuing links, all my IE windows close
automatically. The cursor hangs on a busy cursor. And any attempts to
open another IE window fails for several seconds afterwards; they
close as well. Is this a new virus? Or something google is doing to
disuade "free" usage of its services? Thanks.

I never realized that Google was that intelligent ;-)

I don't have that problems with Google.
Perhaps schan your pc with an AV, perhaps use Stinger for a fast
check. Scan for other malwarez...
