IE closes with JavaScript on home page under SP2

R

rr news

With Service Pack 2 installed and I try to open IE (with my home page
containing some simple JavaScript that sets the screen size and position) it
immediately closes and sounds a windows default beep. Prior to SP2 this
worked perfectly and after uninstalling SP2 also perfect so I know it has
something to do with SP2.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
John

Hi John,

Thank you for posting here!

You have already narrowed this issue to SP2. Windows XP SP2 has greatly
enhanced and tightened the security. I believe SP2 has blocked certain
unsigned Javascript.

I suggest you set the security to Medium low and test this issue in SP2:
1. Open Control Panel->Internet Options->Security tab
2. Click Internet if you home page is from the Internet, choose Local
Intranet if your home page is local, click Custom Level button.
3. Select Medium low or Low level besides to Reset to section and click
Reset.
4. Make sure Java permission is set to Low Safety or Medium Safety level in
Security Settings section.
5. Click Trusted sites in Security tab and add the website you want to
visit.
Re-test this issue, what is the result?

If the issue persists, set the homepage to www.micrsoft.com, can you
successfully open the homepage?

Meanwhile, please let me know the website or send me a sample html file so
that I can reproduce this issue on my side.

If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know.

Have a nice day!

Hi Rebecca,

Thank you very much for your reply. I am currently running without SP2
awaiting a return call from Microsoft level 2 support as they might want me
to re-install SP2 under their direction as they did previously with an
escalation specialist.

Here is the exact contents of my home page URL that IE/SP2 won't run -- the
line split when I copied it here:

javascript:resizeTo(775,545);
moveTo(15,5);document.location.href="http://www.erh.noaa.gov/er/buf/products
/Livingstonwx.html"

I appreciate your help.

Thanks again,
John

John,

I've been running the exact same script as you (but with my home page, of
course) and had *exactly* the same problem when I installed SP2. I would
very much appreciate hearing from you when you get an answer as I've been
frustrated with the responses I've received from Microsoft support to date.
And it's absolutely and SP2 issue ... happened instantly when I loaded SP2
and not before.

Also, I've tried Rebecca's options changes (thanks!) and they didn't make
any difference at all. Maybe it's impossible to ever run an unsigned
javascript ... h-mmm, well, I hope that's not true.

Thanks for your message ... it's good to know someone else has this same
issue.
