Is there a fix for "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close" when
linking to a PDF? It is possible to right click on the link and save the
file, but trying to open the file directly causes the noted shutdown.

Hi Wedge66a :-)

There are a number of reasons for this, and since you do not mention the
version of IE or Windows you are using, I'll post a few solutions that have
worked for others:

Try the following and see if it helps:

Set your Sercuity level for Internet to Medium or Low.

For best security set Active X settings to:

My settings are for Active X are:
Prompt
Disable
Disable
Prompt
Prompt

also...........

Allow active content to run in files on My Computer - Windows XP Service
Pack 2:

also.........

Try opening Acrobat reader before opeing the links.

and........

Start> Run> Paste this
sfc /scannow (note the space between the c and /)
Hit enter

If that does not resolve the issue, then do the following:

Resets all the IE functions - for windows, hangups,

Start> Run> Paste this
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll

and then do the same with each one of the following..

regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

also.......

Close all browsers and acrobat windows.
Start Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.
Choose Edit / Preferences / General.
In the Options section, select Display PDF in Browser.
Click OK, and then exit from Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.
Restart Internet Explorer.

If still no joy, then try uninstalling and reinstalling the Acrobat.

Here are a few KB articles that might also help:

Close (Mshtml.dll)

Needs to Close (Pdm.dll)

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Thanks,

Setting Security to Medium seems to have worked. I had a custom setup and
apparently something there was the issue.
