When accessing email, I get to the screen that shows me who the email is from
and the subject, etc. etc.. but when I click on the email to read it, I get a
message saying that IE has encountered a problem and must be shut down and
then the window disappears... any suggestions?

First eliminate any scumware.
CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

See

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

correction it was a "RUNDLL" error

When I try clearing it while IE is running I get the first message (an error
has been found and .... blah, blah blah)...
when it is not running I the the following message.
- An exception occurred while trying to run
"C:\Windows\system32\shell\32.dll,Control-RunDLL
"C:\Windows\System32\inetcpl.cpl", Internet Options

(sorry had to type it... when I get that message the only thing my comp will
let me do is click "ok")

Still not working. I am wondering how I can reload IE6... or would that
even effect this type of problem...
I did find one other problem which I think may be affecting this. I tried
cleaning the cache and got an error..(sorry didnt copy it... I'll try and
copy that error here shortly... it was a "run.dll" error of some sort..) and
then it shut down again..grrr...

We need more information to be able to help you. Click on the details button
(or details link) when your system crashes and provide:

xxx caused an xxx in xxx at xxx:xxxx

or if you are using a later operating system, provide information about the
files (modules) involved in the crash.

If you are using the Error Reporting Tool, disable it so you can access the
error message in a more understandable form. Informationon how to disable
the Error Reporting Tool is here:
