When I click on the 'X' to close IE, nothing happens.
The minimize and mazimize buttons work fine, but the
close button does not work.

Any ideas why would be appreciated.

This is probably due to a spyware program
but could also possibly be a virus.

Let's do this:

Control Panel | Internet Options | General tab

Delete all cookies
Delete all temporary internet files
(include all offline content)
Remove all Downloaded Program Files
To do that, you click on that "settings"
button and then click on the "View Objects"
button and then right click and choose remove
for all of them, if any, one at a time. This is no
big deal, subsequent web browisng will just prompt
you to download these again if needed.
Close the Downloaded Program Files window,
Click OK to the Settings window.
Now clear History

Now click on the "Advanced" tab at the top
of Internet Options.
In the Browsing section, uncheck the box for
"Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)"
Click "Apply" and then "OK" at the bottom
of Internet Options
Close out of Control Panel

Restart the computer

Download one or both of these Anti Spyware programs
and install them, update them and scan your system
and delete any spywares that may be found. If you have a
working Anti Virus program, then update it and scan with it,
otherwise use one of these free online virus scanners:

Also make sure you have all XP critical updates installed
from the Windows Update site. To get there, click on Tools
at the top of Internet Explorer while online.

If none of this resolves the issue, you could delete the following key from the Registry and then reboot:
Be very carefull in editing the registry, mistakes could render the system inoperable!
Before editing the registry, create a Restore Point that can be used if needed.

Start > Run > type in "regedit" (without quotes) and press <Enter>

In Registry Editor, navigate to this key (keys look like folders):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects

You would right click on the Browser Helper Objects key and click on Delete and then click Yes that you really want to do delete it.

Then close Registry Editor

Restart computer
