If the screen freezes with IE, then that's most commonly caused by video
drivers that need updating. Go to the web site of your video card
manufacturer and get the latest drivers for your card. As a work around,
try turning down your hardware acceleration, color depth, and/or screen
resolution. If these work, then new drivers are in order.
Other causes are scripting engines that need reinstalled or updated:

Or the Java VM:

And, if you are using a McAfee anti-virus program, and it's set to scan all
files, try changing it to scan programs and documents only.

Recent problem of no sound card functionality on a Windows ME machine.
Did a system restore from CD and all works fine. All applications work fine
including IM accross a fast ethernet connection at college campus or on dial
access. When IE is opened it hangs up the system! No error indication or
protection fault just system hangs and requires a reboot to free it up.
Tried removing and re-installing ie and no help. Need assistance or at
least a pointer for next place to check.
