IE Can't Take A Hint

Dustin

I've switched browsers from Internet Explorer to Firefox
after finding out just how bad IE is.

Now, here is my problem.

I use Windows XP Home and I use Firefox .9 as my
webbrowser. I've told Firefox to be default when it asked,
I even set it as default in Program Defaults in Add/Remove
programs.

Now, I would have posted this in a Mozilla/Firefox forum
but the problem is with IE. Even after I set Firefox to
default in XP, my settings just seem to revert to IE being
the default and its getting rather annoying.

I swear I have set it back 20+ times already. I should
have only had to do it once, but no.

Is there any way to knock some sense into IE so it can
take the hint that I don't use it anymore and that it has
been replaced?

Oh, by the way, this Newsgroup loads like crap under
Firefox. I had to use IE to do this, which is a thing I
don't really like to do but whatever, it ain't my fault
this site doesn't work right under standard supporting
browsers.

Perhaps you should ask the person(s) who explained just how bad IE is?

Tools>internet options>programs tab.

Is the box marked IE should check if it's the default browser checked? Try
changing that and see what difference it makes if any?

That probably isn't a bad idea since most here concentrate on keeping IE
working.

My you do dislike IE don't you? Well the web interface is not good for
anyone so I would suggest you use Outlook Express (or perhaps another
newsreader?) to access the newsgroups, it really is a better method.

Quite easy to set up, this link will get things going

news://news.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser

news://news.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress

Incidentally both methods work okay using Linux and the browsers /
newsreaders that come along with that so perhaps firefox isn't so great
after all?

"Incidentally both methods work okay using Linux and the browsers /
newsreaders that come along with that so perhaps firefox isn't so great
after all?"

Ah, but I found the newsreader in Mozilla Thunderbird (which is a email
client) works just fine.

Ok then, going to Intenet Options > Programs ...... I see the checkbox
is not checked.

Yes, I dislike IE, if that wasn't obvious enough.

I would have posted this at the MozillaZine forum but like I said, the
problem is with IE and their forums were down from overload last I checked.

"Perhaps you should ask the person(s) who explained just how bad IE is?"

Here is one thing that was rather convincing to what makes IE so bad.....

http://channels.lockergnome.com/news/archives/20040615_why_you_should_dump_internet_explorer.phtml

I found this a rather convincing page to assist in switching

http://www.flexbeta.net/main/articles.php?action=show&id=32

Moving along, I still see no fix to this problem. IE can't take a hint
and its driving me up the wall having to set it back over and over again
to Firefox.

Any other help would be great, thanks.

This Part doesn't help?
NOTE: Internet Explorer 6 is preinstalled by default in all versions of
Windows XP. To provide computer manufacturers greater flexibility in
configuring desktop versions of Windows XP, Microsoft has made it possible
for OEMs, administrators, and users to remove user access to Internet
Explorer while leaving the Internet Explorer code intact and fully
functional to ensure the functionality of programs and operating system
functions that rely on it. For example, Windows XP supports an
"IEAccess=off" switch in the Unattend.txt file, and Internet Explorer has
been added to the Add/Remove Windows Components section of the Add/Remove
Programs tool in Control Panel

Good, newsreader is much easier and you can search for answers better.

Well I "Think" if it's checked IE should ask and maybe if it asks and you
tell it directly the problem may go away. I don't know of any other reasons
for this to happen offhand but I assume you have no spyware because it seems
you'd be aware of it if you had.

I guess you could go to a folder and check what's under tools>folder
options>file types> for opening html files. Maybe something there that
should have been changed didn't get changed. I've noticed a couple of HTML
editors don't change things properly so you end up with it sticking to
notepad.

Ok, I've "uninstalled" IE and I've told it to make Firefox
default in Firefox and Program Access Defaults under
Add/Remove programs but the next day when I boot up my
computer (or just reboot), it plays stupid and IE is back
at default.

According to Sandi Hardmeier in an earlier related discussion
(problem with Firefox) this is a "known problem" with a fix in the
"Firefox support forums" (no link provided).
