I'm running IE6 on an eMachine with a LAN connection. I have full strength
on the LAN and can access internet thru MSN through the computer start up
internet connection--but when I click on the Internet Explorer icon all I get
is a "can't find server" message. HELP!

Hi jotheunissen :-)

What version of Windows are you using, and IE (Sp1, SP2)? Also, what
firewall are you using? Zone Alarm, Windows XP (if that is your OS), etc.

Also, go to IE>Tools>Internet Options>Connection>LAN Settings and check to
be sure the Proxy Server box is unchecked.

also...as a possibility

WinsockXPFix

Also, with instructions, at

and

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Jan :)

First eliminate any spyware.
What You Should Know About Spyware
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/devioussoftware.mspx

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

See

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

I've downloaded LSPFIX, I uninstalled my spyware.
I rebooted. Still no connection with IE.
By the way--I'm using SP2.

I'm using Windows XP and SP2.
I've checked my settings and the Proxy Server box is not checked.

Hi Jo T :-)

Try this utility and see what it provides:

Download a copy of LSPFIX here:
