ie cannot find server

I'm working in a LAN environment on a Dell Inspiron 2500 laptop - I'm using a 3com wired connect to a HP switch - it shows I'm connected, but still says it cannot find the server. Help?? My OS is windows2000 professional I'm currently trying to add AVG 8.0 anti-virus - but can't get to the internet to do so.

Are your IP details DHCP or manaully assigned ?
If manually, make sure your on the same IP range, subnet mask, have the same gateway and DNS assigned.
Is your Internet access provided via a proxy.... if so you need to enter the proxy details into IE.
Your router may have limited user licenses, if so you need to upgrade them or get a different router.....
The list goes on....

The amount of times I write this generic answer I think I'll write a proper post later.
