Any ideas/suggestions welcome. Machine was working
yesterday but something has happened to it and now when I
click on IE the system clocks for a few seconds like its
going to open an IE window but no window comes up.

When I click on Windows Explorer or ANY of the system
icons on the right side of the start menu (Control Panel,
My Computer, Printers and Faxes, My Music, My Pictures, MY
Documents, Search) the entire desktop refreshes and the
icons in the "Notification area" are refreshed (acts like
I've logged off of the id and then logged back on).

I've tried to use the "Undo changes to your computer with
System Restore" to see if I could get back to a
functioning desktop but receive a "rstrui.exe - Entry
Point Not Found" error on the WINSTA.dll file. Exact
message is "The procedure entry point
RemoteAssistancePrepareSystemRestore could not be located
in the dynamic link library WINSTA.dll."

Some apps are still working on the machine (e.g., Outlook
Express, AIM ver. 5.5.3415, Windows Medial Player,
Microsoft Office apps, Norton SystemWorks 2003, etc.).

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give. I'm
about ready to format and reinstall...wonder if there are
Linux ready versions of the apps I like to use? ;o)

Hi,

It could be that if you are using Norton Win Doctor on a
regular basis you have made your XP system unstable. I
read an article in Maximum PC last month that was very
critical of the NWD program. The reviewer/Tech stated that
he would not use it on any system in their lab, period.
If you have used NWD then UNDO the changes is an option.
If, you have the history saved and not set to delete
after so many(x)days, see if that helps.
