IE 8.0 crash

I am slowly recovering from an IE 8.0 crash. I have tries severl things to
remove IE 8 and reinstall IE 7 to little avail. PC is Win XP with 1 G RAM,
AVG, Comodo FW plus usual anti malware programs.

I tried removing IE 8 via control panel 'Add/Remove Windows Compnents', a
removal tool from MS web site, ran sfc with my original XP disk three times,
reinstall 7.0 and am getting close.

My last try to intall IE 7.0 brought a new icon to my desktop named
"Internet Explorer Troubleshooter" which I tried to use but which did not
address the problem.

When I click on the IE 7 icon now, IE tries to start but does not show any
menu items, does give me an address area for a few seconds and then quits.

Examining Control Panel icons indicates my "Internet Options" icon is gone
which appears to hold or guide the info for IE to run. I do now see an Icon
sitting on the upper left corner of Control Panel with no name so that may be
it. I have tried expand inetcpl.cp_ a couple of times from my original XP
install disk as mentioned in the new found troubleshooter but it does not
provide any aid.

My guess is that I need to get a fully privisioned "Internet Options" icon
(whatever that means) to get IE 7 to work again.

Forgive me if I have rambled but between trying to remove IE 8.0 and all the
reboots for the changes I am getting lost in an unknown forest. Your help or
suggestions would be appreciated very much, as usual. Thank you. I really
should sign in as 'Dummy in the dark'.
 
IE8 isnt in add/remove windows components,it simply in Add/Remove programs.
If you ran Sfc several times,you failed to mention CHKDSK C: /F This should
be added after Sfc runs,allowing the OS to reconfigure files/data..At this
point,
try booting to xp cd,recovery console,type:CHKDSK C: /R It can be ran on xp
restart,but recovery is best..
 
It appears as though my reply to you is lost in cyberspace. I was unable to
install recovery console from my XP disk as the error message said the OS
running is newer than the disk version. (Disk from 2001, XP on PC - ver SP3)
so I am at a stand still.

I do thank you for the response. Any idea how I should proceed to get a
newer version of recovery console?

I have the same problem on my machine as well as a friends machine. The
circumstances are almost identical. We downloaded the new IE8 and then every
time we tried to get on the internet , the page would load 90% and then just
shut down or go back to the desktop. We tried all kinds of fixes and with
no success at all. I did not want to reformat my hard drive and reinstall
windows xp. To my understanding this is the only way to fix this problem. I
could not find any patches on microsoft's site and it seems that there are
quite a number of people with this problem. I chose to go download mozilla
fire fox as my new browser until microsoft can come up with a patch to this
problem
 
I kind of hate to add to this thread as I have another running here somewhere
(trying to find it now) but i am going backwards. I am now back to IE 6,
branded IE 7 and it kind of works. I can live without IE as a browser option
except for a few MS sites that require it. I normally use FF or Opera for
speed.

Problem is Windows depends highly ( I think) on a version of IE being
present. (You never really remove the core product, only the shortcut and
some functional subprograms. Again it's a guess). Man, I would not be
interested in trying to chart program flow in any Windows version for all the
money in the world. I am mostly a hardware guy but I can see the extreme
interdependence of all the little parts and understand why our good friends
who help us here ask so many questions about configurations, etc. My hat is
off to all you good folks, in all seriousness.
Thank you so very much. For me this thread can end here but it is not my
choice.
