Both have advantages and can work together on the same machine, but you need
to make IE the Default browser to get Updates from MS site and for other Auto
launch Apps that may work only with IE ( programming-side).

IE does not have to be the default. FF has been my default for years,
and I have no problems when I have to do Windows Update.

I do agree with you, but if you read carefully I said "if you will get any
updates from the Windows Updates site" the OP will need to make IE default,
also other software can complain.
I run on a machine here 4 different browsers one of them the Fox, no problem.

Can't get IE7 for Windows 2000, has to be Firefox.

IE7 run only on XP Home or Higher version of windows it will not run on
Windows 2000. In fact it made for Vista operating system design and looks!.

Your response does not make sense. I said that IE does not have to be
the default to get Windows updates. You then said you agreed, but then
repeated your false assertion that IE must be the default to get Windows
updates.

I said if the OP needs some updates did not install BEFORE from the Monthly
Automatic Updates offer?, do you agree on that?.

Also, some Software will check if IE is the Default browser I SEEN IT doing
that in the past, can't remember the software name.
If the OP or anyone for that matter having the Fox as the default , they
will be able to get windows updates from the Windows Automatic updates engine
Some software on CDs when it played it will check if IE is the default and
prompt you to set it if it wasn't the default browser to play whichever
contents on the CD if not being supported by a RD package on the CD!.
Anyway, hope you got it now and it made sense to you <g>.

You'll get 100 different responses.
But they both can be installed.
IE 7 only works on XP or better so that's a limitation.
The two programs, or should I say every browser, is different.
I find that some web pages are better in one than the other. Its not
as bad as it used to be with Mozilla browser, but they are different
programs. You would think HTML was HTML but its not.
I find the Verizon web pages don't want to work properly in Firefox.
You have to make one the default browser. And that is up to you. I use
firefox. Windows updates default to IE all the time. I guess they
launch iexplore.exe not just what windows is configured for.

The basic point is, yes, you can run them. And if you choose Firefox
and it was a wrong choice default back to IE.

Well said Al....

That's like asking "which is better, steak or lobster?" You'll find
lots of people who prefer the one and lots of people who prefer the
other.

My personal view is that better than either is IE7 with the Maxthon
shell running on top of it. Go to www.maxthon.com.

or can they work together without clashing????

Yes they can.

My recommendation is that you ignore everyone else's opinion
(including mine) and try the alternatives (including Maxthon) for
yourself, and decide which one *you* prefer.

Hi jo68 , I have IE7 , Firefox and Opera on my system , Opera browser
being my default . Also get free email with opera ( with adverts )
unless you pay for the premium service .

Might be better to stick with IE6 and FF, as (I think) IE7 removed Outlook
Express (but I could be wrong on my memory here).

Also, if you install IE7, is it even possible to uninstall it and revert
back to IE6 (if you wanted or needed to) without problems? It may be a
one-way trip.

IE7 comes with OE???? Or it doesn't remove OE6 after being installed?
Or??
Oh, wait a minute. I think I'm getting this mixed up with something on
Vista where OE was removed?

I do not understand what you are saying. All I can say is that I have
never encountered a problem with doing Microsoft updates when Firefox --
and before that, Mozilla -- were the defaults. But let's just leave
this thread as it is: I doubt the OP benefits from this dialog.
Also, some Software will check if IE is the Default browser I SEEN IT doing
that in the past, can't remember the software name.

I will take your word that some software may want IE to be the default.
I have never experienced this, and the OP may never, but I will accept
that it is not impossible.

No, that's not correct.
I'm running xp sp2 and IE7, and firefox and OE6 is present.

OK then, well, maybe it comes down to this, then: if you buy Vista, perhaps
it comes with IE7 installed, but without OE (i.e., something else is used
for Mail/News). Maybe that's what I was recalling.

Sort of, but not exactly. In Vista, there's a new version of OE, and
it's had a name change. It's now called Windows Mail, but it's really
just the latest version of OE.
