J.R.

I am very new to all this and am still learning and need help. When I click
on the icon on the desk top for IE6 9 times out of 10 after a moment or two
there is a flicker across the screen and then nothing. When I click again,
same thing. Rarely after several minutes there may appear a web page.

How do I correct this? I am using XP. Still learning.

Hi J.R :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Delete the desktop icon, right click on the desktop/properties
/desktop/customized desktop, and check to add internet explorer to the
desktop .

However, it is possible that you have some malware, spyware or adware
causing the problem, so you should work through the following to make sure
none of these are on your system.

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Be sure to run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.
If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Also be sure to use the HijackThis. Please do not post your log to this
newsgroup, but to the SpywareInfo or the Aumha HiJackThis forums
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30, to allow the experts there to
evaluate your log and advise you of the necessary steps to clean your
system.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Also, get a copy of WINSOCKXPFIX available at:

and

From LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-

(NOTE: It is reported that in XP SP2, the command netsh winsock reset
will fix this problem without the need for these programs.)

Download Sysclean.com, from Trend Micro, here:

file, here:

Be sure to read the "How-to" info here:

You might also want to get Art's updater, SYS-UP.Zip, here for future
updating of these: http://home.epix.net/~artnpeg/.
(If you download and use the updater from the beginning, it will
automatically handle downloading the other files. Place them in a dedicated
folder after appropriate unzipping, and then run. This scan may take a long
time, as Sysclean is VERY extensive and thorough

and......

NOTE: If you can not download these programs from the Internet, if your PC
has CD read capabilities, go to another computer with CD-ROM burning
capabilities. Create a folder on the hard drive of the other computer called
HOLD, download the programs to that folder, then burn that folder to a CD.
Copy the HOLD folder to your HD and then install the programs from there
and run them. After you have IE access again, update all programs where
possible to get the latest definitions and run them again in Safe Mode to be
sure there are no lingering items on the system.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Jan II,
I think the IE thing is fixed with the info you gave me. I want to go one
step further though. On the sites that you are sending me to download, I had
gone to spybot-S&D earlier in the day and was just led from one thing to
another to download. How do I decide what to download and what not to
download? I have Norton SystemWorks on my machine and how much do I need to
complement that program? Also, one of the sites suggested that I download a
program and then make a fold and name it 'host' and I did and it checked my
system and then it says that everything labeled trojan or spyware needs to
be put in some sort of folder or placed somewhere but did not tell me how. I
know this is a lot, but I am trying to get my computer cleaned up.

Can you help?

Thanks, J.R., Still Learning.

Hi J.R. :-)

Click here to download the SpyBot S&D DSO file. This should start the direct
download for you.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=4392&file=11&evp=17a4645dc80f11461d8549719a9350e0

Norton is an antivirus, it's definitions are for detecting and
removing/disinfecting viruses. There are many other types of malware,
spyware and adware that can infect your system that an anti-virus program
can not detect or remove, as it does not have the necessary definitions.
SpyBot and 'Spy..' programs detect and remove spyware, AdAware and adware
related programs detect and remove adware. Unfortunately, at this time
there are no 'all-in-one' programs that do all of this at once. That is
why you need to have the various programs to fully clean your system.
Agreed...it is a PITA, but, so is the scumware. :-)

Go here and run this program and I'll get back with you on the other part of
your message regarding the Trojans and spyware. I'm checking on that.....
:-)

Also...be sure to run the HiJackThis and post your log in the forums
indicated so they can evaluate the log and let you know what actions you
need to take for items found, if any.

Hope this helps
