When I click on some links, Explorer goes to my home page
rather than to the link. There appears to be no
consistent reason that I can see.

i get the same problem and have yet to find a solution.
newest programs I've installed are the service pack 6 for
IE, mcafee, itunes for windows...

It may be a HOSTS file problem.
Look also for a file named HOSTS (no extension, could be hidden) rename it
OLDHOSTS.
