IE 6 works foe about an hour then can't refresh a site or open a new sit, yet
my DSL
will download e-mails. It appears to be an IE 6 problem. I wanted to
download it again but all I see is IE 7 which I prefer not to download now.
Any ideas

Hi,
Clear the IE cache. IE> Tools> Internet Options> General> Delete files (and
delete offline content when that dialog pops up) It's often recommended that
the TIF folder be kept at about 50 MB (Settings.)

Hope this helps,
Don

I delete files including offline content plus history quit frequently, but
the problem persists. Only a restart allows IE to work when it stops
connecting to the web.

Hi,
The timing issue (about an hour) made it sound like a cache issue, but maybe
not.

Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions."
That's a diagnostic tool- you should not have to leave extensions disabled.
If that helps, you have a troublesome browser add-on, toolbar, etc.
installed. You'll have to disable or uninstall add-ons until you find the
troublesome one.

Has the machine been checked for malware? (Adware, spyware, trojans,
hijackers, etc.)

Hi Don,
Thanks for the response.
I ran Adaware, Spybot and Windows Defender and only found 7 tracking cookies.
I disabled the 3rd party extensions (google toolbar) and no luck. The lack
of response comes after the computer is idle for a while and I try to refresh
a site.
I was hoping I could remove IE 6 and re-install it(or repair if that is an
option).
The problem is where can I find IE 6 as it has been removed from the
Microsoft site.

Hi,
Before trying to download and reinstall IE6, try IE Fix from

If unsuccessful with that, here;s teh article:

Hi Don,
It appears that the first IE fix you suggested worked, but I printed a copy
of all your other web solutions, just in case. I really appreciate your
help!

It appears to be an IE 6 problem.

That is not clear from your symptom description.
E.g. if it was a DNS problem and you were trying to open
a page from a site which was not cached when your POP3 server
address was either cached or known you could have the same symptom
and the cause would be completely independent of IE.

A better test to make that claim credible would be to show that your DNS
is still functioning for the address that IE would need to lookup
(e.g using nslookup in a cmd window) and that another browser
or at least telnet 80 simulating a browser can still connect to an HTTP server.
