IE 6 won't start up properly, it takes many tries, yet each try is listed in
running program list in task manager programs. Running Windows XP Pro. Dialog
box comes up ststing each IE6 try, is not responding, so must manually end
each IE6 program when shutting down. May have been caused by multiple windows
of IE6 running, when had to reboot hard with reset power button after getting
caught in web sites that wont close out.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, the last windows update for XP did me in. I
cant run IE7 or IE8 Beta and had to reinstall Netscape and that doesn't work
properly either and I'm up to date on Windows Defender and Norton Antivirus.
I've come to the conclusion that the Windows Update that was downloaded
4-10-08 is the culprit. Tried to system restore 7-8 different saves dating
back almost a week and it keeps telling me nothing has changed. What's
really perplexing about this is trying to get back on MS website to see if
there's a fix in for this. What MS should do if they weren't so paranoid
about people running illegal copies of windows is to post a binary fix in
the newsgroups, as it stands right now I'm screwed unless I do a full
install of the OS and that reformats my HD. MS must have hired some lamer
for that last update.

What did you think of IE7 compared to IE6? Would you recommend downloading
IE7 to try to fix my problem with IE6?

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Be more precise? What exactly are you seeing in Task Manager?
E.g. just iexplore.exe (with different PID) in the Processes tab?
Or actual items in the Applications tab? If so, what do you see
if you right-click those? Then do you also see at least one IE icon in the Task bar?
And if so, right-click them too. The menu items you see that way
give you clues about what you can do to change your symptom.

A more likely explanation is that you have incompatible third-party programs
which are interfering. Start Internet Properties (e.g. Run...) control inetcpl.cpl
and uncheck (in Advanced tab, Browsing section):
Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)

Then Run... iexplore.exe -nohome
What do you see?

Unfortunately, some interferers can not be stopped by that option
so it may also be necessary to prevent other programs from starting.
A simple way to do that without having to be able to identify other
active programs or know how they got started, would be to boot
in safe mode.
