i recently had to reinstall win me. when i did, internet
explorer reverted to ie 5.5. now i am unable to either
uninstall that or upgrade back to ie 6.

i have tried uninstalling any patches to ie 6, and
uninstalling outlook express, all through the 'add/remove
programs' feature in control panel, but this hasnt helped.
i have also tried both the 'typical' and 'custom' install
to no avail.

the download seems to occur, but when the
extraction/installation part of the installation happens,
the process seems to hang up for a bit, then seems to just
skip over the browser and its integeral parts. outlook
express is one of these parts, so is the browser
enhancement pack.

can anyone give me a solution to this problem? thanks in
advance for any help.

Unfortunately, if you reinstalled ME over itself without first removing
IE6 the result is a version "soup" of IE files. First attempt to repair
the IE6 installation :

Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194177

Boot to Safe Mode before attemtpting the repair :
" To use the Internet Explorer Repair tool:
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then
double-click Add/Remove Programs.
On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5(?),
click Add/Remove, click Repair the current installation of Internet
Explorer, and then click OK. "

If IE is not listed in Add/Remove Programs, try this method also on the
above page --
" If the Internet Explorer Repair Tool Verification does not work, or if
Internet Explorer 5(?) is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs tool in
Control Panel, you may be able to start the Internet Explorer Repair
tool from a command prompt:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK:

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

NOTE: This command is case sensitive. "

If the above method fails there is a radical method to remove IE from
your system but it is not supported by Microsoft. That being said, it
has been very successful for other users. Please attempt the above to
see if "surgery" can be avoided. If it succeeds you will have IE5.5 again.

ok... after trying all the things recommended, i am still
unable to get ie 6 to install. at this point, as far as i
know, i have 2 options: format c:\u or just be content
with ie 5.5. or, maybe i could print out the list of all
the files in internet explorer and delete them, then try
again.

i did download the spyware program, and it seems to be
more thorough than the one i had been using---
spywareblaster. but i am at a total loss about ie 6...

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP

The second method works on WinMe.

well... i dont know what has happened... but ie6 still
wont install. i still have one hair left... i think i will
save it for tomorrow. thanks, and happy new year.

For the "unable to install all components" issue in WinME, try this:

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.

Good luck,

Zee

First - go here, and follow the instructions on how to
download IE6 for
installation offline (if you don't already have a CD copy
of the files)
http://www.broomeman.com/support/wsiedown.html
Then (preferably) copy the files to a CD so that you've
got them available
if you need them again later.

Then - go here and download the IERadicator
http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html

Run it to remove all traces of IE from your machine, then
follow Donny's
instructions on how to install IE6 from the downloaded
files.

Also - look here for advice from MS
"How to Remove Internet Explorer 6.0 or Outlook Express
6.0 Before You
Reinstall Windows (Q312474)"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-

or
"How to Remove Internet Explorer 6 by Reinstalling Windows
(Q312451)"

HTH - and Good Luck!

now... ieradicator worked, but it also removed any updates
that had been made, and the java virtual machine (i think
it is called), which microsoft no longer supports... so i
had to go to sun microsystems and download their version.
it works, but i think microsoft's version was smoother.

i also have about a hundred updates for ie6 that i now
need to sift through to figure out what i have to have...
then install them. any help here would be appreciated.

thanks again for the suggestions, and happy new year to
you all.

You'd do best by going to Windows Update and letting its V4 Engine identify
needed updates and patches, instead of picking & choosing ones you think you
need. To assure a clean install, your anti-virus application should be
disabled and all other running processes closed before going to Windows
Update and when downloading/installing from any MS page.

As for Java/Java VM, see http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers_9.htm.

[Thanks, Noel & Mow Green!]
